SkinCeuticals Redness Neutralizer Review

I've been using the SkinCeuticals Redness Neutralizer every morning (not morning and night as recommended, which may be significant) for a full two months now and I thought it was time I report back. I had been hoping to see a major difference in the level of redness in my skin, particularly on my cheeks. Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case. If there has been a reduction in redness it has been subtle and wouldn't be visible in before and after photographs

What I have noticed is a reduction in the intensity of my flushes. I still get them, but they don't feel as hot or aggressive as before. The acid test would really be to observe what happens after I drink a glass of red wine but I rarely drink red these days in order to avoid palpating cheeks and also because it tends to make me headachey. Typically, my cheeks would flush after only a few mouthfuls and one large glass would be sufficient to make me a purpled-red all the way across my cheeks to my ears and down to my jaw. It also has a tendency to spread down to my chest as well. I might have to indulge in a glass, simply in the interests of thorough research. It's a shame I couldn't hire a VISIA specifically to quantify the red wine effect!

The texture of the redness neutralizer is very nice. It has the feel of a light cream and absorbs readily. I apply it after cleansing and leave it to sink in a little before applying a moisturiser. I do find it to be hydrating and I don't need to apply as much moisturiser, in a similar way to when I use a serum.

Although I've been disappointed in the lack of dramatic results, I have continued to use it and I intend to carry on until the bottle is empty. This will probably take quite a while as a pump and a half is enough to cover my face. I think I've refused to stop using it just in case it has had more of an impact than I realise. I'm particularly interested to see if there's a sudden increase in skin redness after I've stopped using it and of course, I will report back if that is the case.

SkinCeuticals Redness Neutralizer costs around £70 for 50ml. You can find a list of authorised retailers here.

  1. Too bad this doesn't help. I thought perhaps it wasn't working on you because it was designed for skin that is consistently red--due to broken capillaries or something--rather than on reactive red skin. But then I noticed the box says this should work on environmental triggers of redness, so I'm wrong! What a shame it doesn't work as expected. Still, I suppose a reduction in the intensity of the flushes is something. My own redness-prone skin has calmed down enormously since switching to 100% natural skin care products about 3 years ago (tho I do wear "unnatural" cosmetics). But before that I would have loved a product like this--if it worked.

    1. Hi Sam, yes, I did investigate the details and it should work on my sorts of flushes. I have a feeling it isn't recommended for broken capillaries but I would need to double check that. I looked up the reviews on MUA once I'd reached my conclusion and it seems to get a mixed response on there. It works for some but not others.

May I be nosy and ask which skincare brands you are favouring at the moment? I've been trying to work through all of my cleansers with a view to investing in one from a 'clean' line and I'm almost there!

    2. Here's the short answer: completely natural/"clean" brands I love and use regularly include Live Native, Bubble & Bee Organic, Kahina Giving Beauty, and Lina Hanson (her Global Face Serum is incredible). I generally keep things simple: an oil balm cleanser to remove makeup at night, followed by an oil serum and moisturizer; then a different cleanser in the morning, also followed by oil serum and moisturizer. If I use totally natural products that are very moisturizing and not irritating, my skin stays very calm. A breakout once a month, yes, but otherwise my skin doesn't get irritated or dry.

      The longer answer...
I adore Live Native's Cleansing Balm at night. Have you tried it? (I know you've used their Earth Exfoliating Cleanser, which I also love, I use it in the a.m.) I think their oil balm cleanser is brilliant at melting off all makeup--including waterproof mascara--without any irritation. However, shipping to the US is rather expensive, so lately I've been using something different at night: 100% Pure's Brightening Night Balm. It's actually not a cleansing balm at all (it's a moisturizer) but it works really well, and it's less expensive than the Live Native (tho I don't love it quite as much).

In the morning, I clean my face with the Honey & Rosehip Facial Cleanser from Bubble & Bee Organic. Do you know this line? It's wonderful--completely natural, great results. (I'm not affiliated with them at all, really!) Not sure if shipping costs to the UK would be painful, but their product prices are very reasonable. They have nice bath and body items, and I recommend their Facial Cream: extremely moisturizing and only 3 ingredients. The Facial Cleanser I use works really well for my dry skin--but it might be too oily for someone with combination skin. (And it smells WEIRD. They say so right on their site, so I put up with it, but I don't like the smell.) They do have other cleansers for other skin types. If you're curious, I'd give them a try; their products are special.

Finally, in terms of non-oil-balm cleansers: I used Pai's cleanser for a year or so. I know you've used and liked it--is it still working for you? Have you tried Kahina Giving Beauty's cleanser? It's quite nice--very good for less-dry skin than mine. Soothing and light. Definitely try it if you can.

Sorry for such a long response! You can see I'm a little, uh, obsessive about natural skin care. I used to buy terribly expensive skin products and yet my skin was always red, irritated, and dry, so learning about these simpler options literally changed my life. Okay, I'm stepping off the soap box now. :) I'm excited to hear (well, read) about what you try next. I hope it works well...

  2. Thanks for a frank and honest review. I always feel a bit cautious of reviews that are all singing & all dancing. I am looking forward to hearing how you got on with the Dr P, Blue Plasma. Do you have any recommendation for very slight pignentationm marks & v slight redness for pale skin. Thank you :)

    1. Hi Anon. It's interesting that you've mentioned the Blue Plasma, I know I'm overdue on reviewing this too! That's definitely a product that will get a mixed response as it does have a gentle exfoliating action but you won't particularly notice any difference if you're already using a product containing glycolic acid. I've been using an Alpha H cleanser with GA and the Blue Plasma is definitely redundant alongside it.

Treating pigmentation is something I looked into some time ago and it's something I ought to revisit, as I still have some patches from pregnancy and redness from old blemishes. I liked using both the Snowberry face cream and the Caudalie Vinoperfect but neither fixed things completely. I'm partly to blame though for not being more diligent during the summer. Depending on the type of pigmentation you have, you might want to investigate the Suti Rejuventate Oil?

  3. Gosh thanks so much for all the information. I understand now why am not really seeing much difference with the the Blue Plasma but determined to finish. My very slight pigmentation marks are also from pregnancies but prob not really noticeable to others,as I am very pale tho any redness/pigmentation is really annoying. I have never heard of suti but will def look into the oil. I have just ordered the new Pai Age confidence and also the Liz Earle superskin concentrate oil. No idea what any of the ingredients to but liked the look of them. Hope they won't irritate. Thanks you :)

  5. I've been taking Skin Accumax supplements for about a month now and have really noticed that any redness in my skin has been dramatically reduced. Might be worth a try? http://www.skinaccumax.com/
