My Sheer Lipstick Collection including ILIA Beauty Dizzy and W3LL People Lip Shine #3

I was struggling with inspiration for a post this morning, so we have Miss MB and Musing on Beauty to thank for this blog post. Miss MB was wondering around with one of my new lipsticks, which is always dangerous, but seeing the lipstick made me realise that I have a fairly large collection of sheer finish lipsticks which continues to grow.

The lipstick she was clutching was the W3LL People Nudist lip shine in #3 above, a gorgeous glossy sheer red with a lovely balmy texture. It's one of the items I purchased whilst I was at Content Beauty last week to meet Sasha Plavsic, founder of ILIA Beauty. I will return to this visit in another post as Sasha was incredibly inspiring and I have lots to report back. Meeting Sasha and also browsing all the lovely natural brands in Content has had me reflecting on whether I want to make a more permanent switch to cleaner brands in future. Anyway, I digress..

Sasha inspired another new lipstick purchase whilst I was there, her Lip Conditioner in Dizzy. This orange sheer is a favourite with her Mother, who loves it for layering. Depending on the natural colour of your lips, Dizzy can produce a more coral shade. I purchased it for layering with brighter colours and so far have had success pairing it with Lancome Rose Boudoir.

I have always been a fan of sheer lipsticks, as they're so easy to wear but I seem to have made a major return to them recently. All of the ones I have here are really balmy and comfortable to wear and are excellent if you suffer from dry lips. The ILIA lipstick in Crimson & Clover isn't strictly speaking a sheer but I wanted to include it alongside the other ILIA lip colours. It's more pigmented than the lip conditioners but I don't find it completely opaque either. I have reviewed the majority of these lipsticks before and will add links where available.

From left to right: ILIA Blossom Lady*, Arabian Knights, Dizzy, RBR Murmurings, Crimson & Clover, W3LL People Nudist #3 & #2*, Chantecaille Lip Chic in Zinnia, No.7 Poppy King lipstick in Glamour and Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Bonheur.

Do you like to wear sheer lipsticks or do you prefer to wear a gloss to create a lip shine? I'd also love to hear your opinion of more 'clean', botanical based lines too.

* The lipsticks labelled with an asterisk were received as PR samples, albeit rather a long time ago.

    1. Hi Doris, I think once you've tried the Ilia formula, it's hard not to want more!

  3. I have recently made a switch to clean cosmetics and I honestly don't miss the "dirty" ones at all. There are some lovely products out there and even a clean monthly box (goodebox). I was just no longer interested in all the chemicals, especially considering I have psoriasis. I thought that reducing the chemicals might help it out.

    1. I think there are so many great 'clean' brands now, it doesn't feel like you're having to make a compromise on quality of function which used to be the case. Have you found that making the switch has helped with your psoriasis?

    2. coconut oil as a moisturizer has definitely helped. However, I'm not completely "clean" yet so I don't feel like I can quite make an accurate assessment

  4. I have 6 matte lipstick, 7 sheer lipsticks, one lip tint/stain and 4 glosses - so I like sheer lipsticks the most.

'Clean' companies tend to use ingredients from sustainable sources, use fair trade ingredient and not test on animals so I always go for products that boast this (but I always check that that is what I'm buying) however I have learnt a lot from 'TheBeautyBrains', they are cosmetic scientists who know the truth about the industry - not everything you read about chemicals is true and remember, even water is a chemical. If something works for you then thats great though.

    1. Hi EJ! I am a scientist (although not working at the moment) and my husband is a working biochemist and I'm glad you mentioned that everything is a chemical, irrespective of how it is derived. This has always been a huge bugbear of mine and why I struggle to use the term natural. I know what companies are trying to get across when they pit natural vs chemical but I don't like the suggestion that natural is good and chemical is bad.

I very much agree that you have to do your research and look at the ingredients in a product. I do wish there was less scaremongering about certain ingredients so that people could make better informed choices though.

  5. What a fantastic post!!! I'm frothing at the mouth looking at this gorgeous collection!! I have also been thinking about cleaner products lately-- especially for lippies since we end up ingesting so much of what we put on our lips-- a bit frightening when you think about it! Thank you for the inspiration and added lemmings!!!!! xxoo

    2. Enjoyed is an understatement! I am gleefully in awe of your collection. You have been tempting me with Ilia and W3LL People for so long-- it's about time that I actually pick up a few things!! I absolutely LOVE sheer lipsticks-- they are by far my favorite! Have a lovely weekend (since it is nearly here). xx

  6. well there is lots of pretties there :) I am trying to buy more "clean" makeup but not all is that successful, actually I bought my first llia product and am really not impressed, I almost wonder if there is something wrong with mine as I know you are Grace are fans so it doesn't seem right I'd not like it too ;) xx

    1. Did you buy one of the lip products or was it one of the cheek sticks? I only have experience of the lip products. I'd be interested to know which aspect you don't get on with as I should be able to tell you if it's something 'wrong' or just a difference in preference x

    2. It was one of their lipsticks, not the balmy ones, it just doesn't feel smooth, bit powdery and looks dry once on? xx

    3. That definitely sounds wrong and like you have a bad one. My Crimson & Clover lipstick is still very balmy in texture and not at all powdery or dry. I would be tempted to return it or contact Ilia. I'm sorry you had a duff experience :(

    4. I ordered it end of July so don't think I could return it and I have used it a few times, not sure if I would get a responce from Ilia? It does sound like its not right though doesn't it, thanks for your input xx

    5. Having seen your picture, I would say the consistency doesn't look right at all. It looks like it could be the beeswax. It's such a shame that is wasn't a hit for you because I know it tends to put one of future purchases xx

    6. Thanks for your views, I have emailed them to ask if its normal so will see if they say anything. I'll try not let it put me off, maybe I'll go for one of the tint ones next time ;) xx

  9. I love sheer lipsticks! They allow me to wear a color that in an opaque version would overwhelm me or have to be applied sheerly with a brush (which I usually can't be bothered to do). You have a marvelous collection! Due to reading your blog I've been drooling just a bit over Ilia. Have told myself that after I finish a few more lip products I can branch out & try some of my lemmings! I appreciate 'clean' makeup lines. Like EJ, I also read The Beauty Brains & am a firm believer in doing my own research before deciding if a product or ingredient will work for me. Another one who is not a fan of scaremongering!

    1. That sounds like a very good plan, I've been thinking about not allowing myself to buy more lip products until I make a bigger dent in what I already have. From what you've said in your comment about researching ingredients and enjoying 'clean' lines, I do think you would like Ilia.
