What's in my Mum's Perfume Archive?

Perfumes7

I embarked on a little treasure hunt when I visited my parents at Easter. The house where my parents live, used to belong to my grandparents. Despite my Mum's best efforts at space-clearing (she's really a 'keep it, just in case' kind of gal) there's evidence of my Grandma everywhere. There's also quite a lot of 'stuff' that belonged to both my sister and myself. We never lived in this house but my parents have dutifully held on to our things through their various moves. Which is quite impressive considering they've changed continents, as well as houses, since I left home!

One passion that the ladies in my family share, is a love of perfume. I was certain that if I did a little digging, I would find an eclectic mix of perfume bottles in the house, both old and new. In fact, I found quite a lot more than I expected, including a couple that might have found their way into my suitcase before I left. There are too many bottles for me to try talk about them all individually, particularly as I didn't get chance to sniff them all, but I have tried to list as many as possible. Of course, some of them really do merit a special mention, particularly from a nostalgic point of view.

Yardley Lace // Yve Eau de Parfum by Giovanni Barrini // Ylena by Giovanni Barrini // Accent Solitare // Multiple bottles of Cachet by Prince Matchabelli // Courant Eau de Parfum Mist by Helena Rubinstein // Yardley Gold Deodorant // Panache Perfume Cologne Spray by Lentheric // Four bottle of Yardley Laughter // First Lady by Dadi // Le Jardin Fleur de Rose EdT by Max Factor // Avert Avert Ypres by Constance Carroll // A Touch of Class by Faberge Cologne // Amando Noir Aftershave // Tea Rose by The Perfumer's Workshop Ltd

The collection above is dominated by bottles that belonged to my Grandmother and I was unsurprised to see a lot of Yardley fragrances. You will notice multiple bottles of Yardley Laughter. This was my Grandmother's signature scent and once it was discontinued, the whole family was under instructions to purchase bottles should we spot them. It reminds me that the irritation of discontinued favourites isn't an especially new phenomenon.

Another perfume that I found in multiples was Cachet by Prince Matchabelli. I remember this perfume well and I'm pretty sure one of these bottles once belonged to me. If memory serves me correctly, the USP for this perfume was that it allegedly smelled different on everyone. Although the name Cachet is well known, I don't think I've come across the name Prince Matchabelli before and I had assumed that Cachet was produced by a different fragrance house. Apparently, the Prince Matchabelli name was once owned by an arm of Unilever.

Shiseido - Relaxing Fragrance // Tendre Poison Eau de Toilette by Christian Dior // Tuscany Per Donna Eau de Parfum by Aramis (not pictured)  // Miss Dior Parfum by Christian Dior // Cacherel Eau de Toilette pour L'Homme // Roger & Gallet Vetyver Eau de Cologne // There's also more Yardley Laughter and other Yardley body sprays in the top picture.

Out of this group, I think the Miss Dior perfume was the most interesting find. I'm sure a perfume expert would be able tell me approximately how old this bottle is but I would guess from the packaging that it is a truly vintage bottle. I couldn't resist giving it a try and thankfully it hasn't gone off. I should mention that my Mum is careful to store her hoarded perfumes in a cool dark place, in their original boxes where possible. Even if she can't remember exactly where she's hidden them...

The Cacherel aftershave I know for certain is one of my Mum's purchases. I've often known her to wear fragrances designed for men, one of her particular favourites being Eau Sauvage by Dior. Although it isn't pictured here, I gifted her my bottle of Molton Brown Singosari, as I knew she would love it. Singosari is a unisex fragrance but seems to share some of the notes of the male fragrances that appeal to her.

The Shiseido Relaxing Fragrance was entirely new to me and I hadn't realised until discovering it that Shiseido made perfumes. It's a rather lovely fresh, green scent and, if I thought my Mum wouldn't have missed it, this would have found its way home with me too.

Chanel Allure Eau de Toilette // Yves Rocher Nature // Cabotine de Gres Limited Edition Eau de Toilete // Aftelier Perfume and For Strange Women samples in the tin

With the exception of the Yves Rocher Nature, which is an old bottle of mine, these are my Mum's newer acquisitions. Although my Mum loves perfume, she does struggle sometimes with a scent triggering a migraine. In recent years, she's become quite adept at mixing perfumes in oil form with a body cream so that she can custom blend the strength. Knowing this, I was pretty certain she would appreciate the oils and solid fragrances from Aftelier Perfumes and For Strange Women. Hence, her acquisition of my tin of samples.

Talking of samples, here's a set of my Mum's that I covet. My Mum and Dad have spent a number of years living in the Middle East and this is how she discovered Amouage. She's benefitted from sales and special shopping events and I believe this is how she came by this little sampler set. She also has some Amouage oils which I have never seen in the UK.

I thought I'd leave you with this photo of Miss MB 'helping' me. It would seem that she's poised to carry on the family tradition, maybe not in her desire to wear perfume but certainly in wanting to run off with someone else's!!

A Treasured Find: Dior Tendre Poison

Tendre Poison2

When I visited my parents over Easter, I did some scouting around for perfumes for a future post. There are many nooks and crannies in their house and the bathrooms in particular are a veritable treasure trove. I was mostly looking for perfumes belonging to my Mum and Grandma but I happened upon this bottle of Dior Tendre Poison which I very much remember being mine...no matter what my Mum claims!

I did a little research and apparently Tendre Posion was created in 1994. So I was right in my recollection that this bottle dates from around the time I went off to University. It's moved around a bit since then (and evidently changed owners!) but thanks to the fact that it's been kept in the box and out of direct sunlight, this perfume smells exactly as I remember it. I really can't describe the fragrance and do it any justice: it's an unusual blend of sweet, floral and zesty and it works really well with my skin chemistry. It is a strong scent but I don't find it over-powering and headache inducing which unfortunately my Mum does. Obviously, you can see why I had to rescue it.

Whilst the scent does evoke fond memories, I don't think of it as particularly dated and I was sad to see that it has been discontinued. I know I'm going to be caught between wanting to wear it all the time and trying to conserve it. I will make a point of trying some of the newer Dior Poison spin offs to see if I can find a suitable replacement.

My Week in Makeup

I woke up this morning, rejoiced because I have a day off and then duly set my mind to what to write today. Unfortunately, my mind was a total blank. This isn't especially unusual for me as I'm not really a morning person and my mind has been similarly blank as I've been getting ready each day this week. Makeup wise, I've relied on tried and tested items that I know will make me look human and prevent me from frightening the already anxious students.

Face Products1

Foundation - I used Max Factor Second Skin foundation* this week. It offers a bit more coverage than my usual Rouge Bunny Rouge tinted moisturiser but it's still quite a light foundation.

Concealers - BECCA Compact Concealer* in praline on blemishes and redness. YSL Touche Eclat* on the undereye area.

Cheek Products - NARS Laguna bronzer, BECCA Turkish Rose, Rouge Bunny Rouge Delicata and Laura Mercier in Petal Pink. I used various combinations of these depending on how drained I looked. My favourite combination at the moment is Delicata all over the cheek area with a tiny sweep of the Laura Mercier on the apples.

Eye products

Brown Liners - I've used both the GOSH Truly Brown and Ben Nye liner in Espresso this week. I prefer the GOSH, I have to admit, as it is easier to apply and lasts longer without smudging.

Eyeshadows - I'm sure you won't be surprised by this taupe fest! I used Solstice Halcyon, Gracious Arasari, the mid brown from Guerlain Les Bois de Rose and various colours from Les Fumes. I also used the highlighter from the Dior Smoky Nude palette on a couple of occasions.

Yesterday I went for a bit of a smoky eye layering the darker colours from Les Fumes over MAC Dirty Greasepaint stick at the lash line then blending out using the pinky tan shade. I was really pleased with the end result and it still felt work appropriate.

Shu Uemura H9 Seal Brown brow pencil and Too Faced Shadow Insurance are both daily staples.

Lipstick+mascara2

Mascara - No.7 Lash Adapt mascara*. I rather like this for everyday but the formula is a little on the dry side so I think that there's a limit to the number of layers you can apply.

Lipsticks - I wore Rouge Bunny Rouge Murmurings and Ilia Arabian Knights interchangeably almost everyday. Arabian Knights stays at home and whilst Murmurings lives in my handbag. I wore my old favourite Rouge Bunny Rouge Irreverence with the smoky eye yesterday.

Hopefully next week I can get myself organised and pack a makeup bag that I can grab for the early morning starts. I'm hoping to fit Edward Bess Dusk and Olive Violeteare in there for some more work appropriate smoky eyes.

Do you have a selection of products that you know won't let you down? Are you quite adventurous with your makeup at work or do you favour neutrals day-to-day?

* Items labelled with an asterisk were received as PR samples.

Rouge Bunny Rouge Part II: Unforgettable Oriole, Bohemian Waxwing and Olive Violeteare

My apologies in advance for this being such a picture heavy post. I had a request for a comparison of Bohemian Waxwing and Solstice Halcyon, so I thought it might be useful to do the same for Olive Violeteare and Unforgettable Oriole too.

RBR+Unforgettable+Oriole1
Unforgettable Oriole

Unforgettable Oriole is a pale creamy gold with iridescent finish. It's a lovely highlighter shade and I like it best for use on the inner third of the eye or just the inner corner. It's perfect for brightening the eye.

RBR+Bohemian+Waxwing4
Bohemian Waxwing

Rouge Bunny Rouge describe Bohemian Waxwing as an iridescent champagne bronze. It's actually a bit of hard colour to describe but I think bronze might be a bit misleading as this certainly isn't as brown as you might anticipate for a bronze. It's more taupe than bronze and the iridescent finish makes it very pretty. It is a very welcome addition to my neutrals collection.

RBR+Olive+Violeteare2
Olive Violeteare

I was a little nervous about whether Olive Violeteare would work for me but I'm pleased to report that it's a thumbs up. It's a smoky olive green with no brown tones. I've used it all over the lid, in the crease, as a liner, and I find it looks good however I use it. It pairs very well with Unforgettable Oriole.

RBR+Eye+Shadow+Keeper5

RBR+Swatches3

The pigmentation of all three colours is good but not as intense as Abyssinian Catbird, for example. All of the swatches are several passes of colour over the skin. Unforgettable Oriole and Bohemian Waxwing have a similar refined iridescent finish and are very smooth to apply. Unforgettable Oriole is a little more sheer than Bohemian Waxwing. Olive Violeteare has a satin finish and isn't quite as smooth as the other two shades.

RBR+Comparison2

Olive+Violteare+Dusk1

Here we can see Olive Violeteare compared to Edward Bess eyeshadow in Dusk. Dusk is more grungy brown that Violeteare and it has a more complex finish. I think Violeteare looks more 'clean' in comparison.

Bohemian Waxwing+Solstice Halcyon2

Colourwise, I suppose that Solstice Halcyon and Bohemian Waxwing are quite similar but I think the biggest difference is in the finish. Waxwing's iridescent champagne glow makes it look lighter than Solstice Halcyon. Solstice Halcyon also has a mauve undertone which Bohemian Waxwing does not. I wondered whether Caress of Mink Loose Glitter pigment might be similar to Bohemian Waxwing but I think Caress of Mink looks a lot more brown when compared to the other two colours.

RBR+Unforgettable+Oriole4

I struggled to find any singles in my collection that were similar to Unforgettable Oriole. In the end, the closest I could find was the highlighter shade from the Dior Smoky Nude palette (#571), which incidentally is my favourite powder highlight, it has the most amazing creamy smooth texture. The Dior is more cream coloured and opaque when compared to Unforgettable Oriole.

RBR+Comparison3

And lastly here's a group shot, just because.  Do let me know if you have any other colours you would like me to compare to these Rouge Bunny Rouge colours, I am always happy to oblige.

The Rouge Bunny Rouge Eye Shadow Keepers and refill pans are available from Zuneta. I believe all of the colours are back in stock now but both palettes are currently out of stock.

Neglected Makeup Challenge Pt II

I set myself a challenge last week to wear seven neglected items from my collection. On the whole it went well, I managed to wear everything in the week with the exception of the MAC pencil. I've got to be in the right mood to wear glittery blue eyeliner and I just didn't feel so inclined. Everything else I wore at least once and in some cases they had several outings. My favourites were definitely the Armani E2K, Guerlain loose kohl and Suqqu Lip Gloss. I'm hoping that reminding myself how much I liked these items will prevent me from neglecting them as much in the future.

I really enjoyed wearing the Dior Gris Montaigne nail polish too and thought I'd share a couple of pictures of how it looked. I have lots of gruple colours and mushroom-y taupes but I think this is the only grey I own that leans so blue. In certain lights this took on an almost navy hue.

Dior Gris1

Dior Gris2

In view of my success last week in re-discovering old favourites, I pulled out another seven items of makeup to wear this week. In this weeks batch of items we have;

Guerlain Rue de Rivoli palette
Bobbi Brown Caviar Ink gel eyeliner
Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in Fume
Chanel Rouge Allure Laque in Ming
Shu Uemura ME brown 850
MAC Magically Cool Liquid Powder in Truth & Light
Sue Devitt Gel to Powder blush in Malay Reef

(the links above are to older posts where I have featured these items previously)

Challenge1

Challenge2

I think most of these items should work quite well together so hopefully I won't have a problem fitting them all in during the week. There's also nothing especially wild. Well, as long as you take no notice of the fuchsia eyeshadow of course! Which neglected item of your collection will you be pulling out this week?

Recent Empties

I thought I would share with you some things I have recently used up. I always find these posts interesting and I think which products get used up completely is often very telling. This is a mixture of sample size and full size products.

Mane 'n Tail Conditioner
This sample size conditioner came with one of my Zuneta orders. I was quite excited to give it a try as I'd read about the Mane 'n Tail products before. It's quite a thick, blobby (for want of a better word) consistency and reminds me a little of an old conditioner I used as a girl. It was really yellow and I seem to vaguely remember something about egg yolks, maybe it was Wella or Alberto Balsam... Anyway, I digress! The Mane 'n Tail conditioner was nice to use and left my hair feeling soft. I think it would be particularly good for those with long hair that is prone to tangling.

All For Eve Shower Gel
I bought this as part of a TSV set on QVC. It has a lovely fresh scent, produces a beautiful lather and doesn't dry my skin. Best of all, it's supporting a really great cause. If you haven't come across All For Eve before, all net profits go to The Eve Appeal which supports research into gynaecological cancers. You can read more about it on their website here.

Batiste Brunette Dry Shampoo
I was really late to the dry shampoo party but I'm getting the hang of it now. I bought the Brunette version as I thought it would be good for avoiding the talc-y look on my dark hair. It also has the added advantage of disguising my grey roots a little. I find it so handy for the days when I'm short on time and it's saved me from being late for school drop off on more than one occasion. I will definitely replace it but might go for one of the other scents for a change.

Alpha-H Balancing Cleanser
I received this sample of Balancing Cleanser at an Alpha-H event a little while ago and I have been using it as my night time cleanser. The texture is between a lotion and a cream. I tend to squirt a bit in my hand, massage over my face and wipe off with a warm cloth (the Eve Lom muslins are my favourite). I find it good at removing all of my makeup used this way and with the consistency, I don't get any greasy residue. There's no scent and the packaging is basic but practical. I like it and if it wasn't for my desire to try a balm cleanser, I'd probably buy a full size.

Dior Capture Total One Essential serum sample
I received this sample when I went to get a shade match for the DiorSkin Nude foundation. I just looked up how much it costs for a full bottle, £65 for 30mls and £80 for 50mls. As the sample only lasted a couple of days, I couldn't really comment on long term performance but from my brief use, this wouldn't be a purchase for me. The serum is supposed to 'boost the performance' of any other treatment you use. The consistency is of the thin, milky cream rather than a liquid (I much prefer a liquid serum). I noticed it did leave a slightly tacky feel to the skin if I didn't apply moisturiser immediately. Although it felt hydrating as it went on, I didn't feel that it 'boosted' my moisturiser as my skin often felt dry again in the morning. It certainly didn't have any immediate plumping or radiance effect on the skin which was a little disappointing after my experience with the Bioeffects EGF serum.

Trilogy Gentle Facial Exfoliant
I was sent this exfoliant as part of my guest blogging stint on Zuneta last year and it's been part of my routine since then. I had previously been used to more gritty products but I found this did the job just as well without feeling scratchy. I love the smell too. This is one I would happily purchase again.

What products have you finished recently? Was it a rate or a hate?

Berry Lip Stains for Autumn

I finally got round to reading some magazines whilst I was on holiday. The lack of internet had the hidden advantage of spurring me on to do a little reading! I found an article on '20 Reasons to Wear More Make-Up' in a copy of Glamour from a couple of months ago. For a start, more reasons to wear make up is always going to catch my attention but what really grabbed me were the stunning lip stains. I have long been a fan of these sorts of berry shades. I think they herald the Autumn approaching, a fabulous time of year for make up colours in my opinion.

I like the idea of using a colour to stain the lips. It makes it much more wearable if you're a little scared of wearing full on dark lips. The lip products that are mentioned are from left to right: Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss Flash in Black-Tie Plum, NARS lipgloss in Strawberry Fields, Giorgio Armani Lip Ink in 1, Clinique Lip Smoothie in Pome-greatness and Guerlain Kiss Kiss Essence De Gloss in Violine. The gorgeous Beauty Bite posted not too long ago about Strawberry Fields lip gloss and it looks beautiful on the lips. I think my favourites from this feature are the Dior Black Tie Plum, Armani Lip Ink and Guerlain Violine. The Giorgio Armani Lip Inks are part of their Autumn 2010 collection out now, which I shall post about in more detail shortly. The Essence de Gloss is part of the Guerlain Autumn collection that I have talked about here.

 Giorgio Armani Lip Inks

Dior Addict Black Tie Plum

Other lipsticks that I think would work well as stains are the two darker lipsticks from the Armani Autumn collection; Black Purple and Deep Ruby. You can see pictures here on The Non-Blonde's blog. Tom Ford's Private Blend lip colour in Moroccan Rouge and Black Orchid (see London Make Up girls posts here and here) would also be ideal but I don't hold out much hope for me getting a Tom Ford any time soon! A girl can dream though.

I think a lip stain and statement eyeliner will be a fabulous and easy look for the Autumn. What sort of colours are you looking forward to wearing? Have you seen any inspirational looks recently?
