So, I already admitted that I put a good deal of obsessing time into planning what to wear to the Lippie wedding. Would you believe me if I said I didn't invest a similar amount of time into deciding what makeup to wear? No, I didn't think so.
I decided I wanted to go down the matchy, matchy route and wear a pink lipstick to match my accessories. These are a couple that I auditioned for the part.
The swatches aren't an exact match for the group above. I didn't included swatch of the OCC Lip Tars but you can find swatches of Pretty Boy and Strumpet here. I decided that the Lip Tars were probably inadvisable as they do feather on me and I need to purchase something like the Lipstick Queen invisible liner to feel confident wearing them. The Kevyn Aucoin Liquid Lipstick in Aquarouge on the far left is a bit of a rogue as it's not a pink, but I love the colour.
From left to right: Kevyn Aucoin Aquarouge, Barry M Punky Pink, Edward Bess Night Romance, Butter LONDON Lippy in Snog and Hourglass Femme Rouge in Nocturnal. I've included links to previous posts which all include lip swatches.
In the end I went for a combination of the Barry M Punky Pink topped with Eos gloss from the LMdB Aurora Lip Kaleidoscope.
What's your opinion of matching your makeup to your outfit? Is it truly as naff as the magazines would have us believe?

OCC Lip Tars in Pretty Boy and Strumpet
I had a sudden inexplicable yearning for bright pink lipsticks this time last week, so when I was offered the chance to try a couple of the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars, I thought I would go bold. I was initially tempted by Anime, a 'so bright it's almost neon' pink but I knew from my experience with MAC's Girl About Town lipstick that I can feel quite self-conscious if I go too bright. So, instead I chose Pretty Boy which is still bright but wearable. I also chose Strumpet, a darker reddy grape colour, I would be lying if I said that I wasn't swayed by the name!
Although I hadn't tried the OCC Lip Tars before, I knew from reading reviews that a little goes a very long well. I armed myself with a lip brush and squeezed out only a tiny blob. The pigmentation is indeed very impressive! I found it a little tricky to get a sharp outline but I'm not very skilled at application with a lip brush.
I had been warned about possible feathering and I was careful not to overload my lips with product however, I did spot that throughout the day the colour did creep a little into my fine lines. You get an idea of what happens from the edges of the swatches above. I'm not sure whether a coloured lip liner or one of the reverse lip liners would work best to prevent this happening.
PRETTY BOY
Pretty Boy is exactly the kind of girly hot pink I was looking for. It's blue toned and bright, but not so bright that I feel that I've becoming walking lips. I did the school run wearing this colour and when my eldest boy saw me his little face lit up and he said "Mummy, your lips are so pink. Is that lipstick?". I don't think I've seen him so excited about my makeup before!
STUMPET
Although Strumpet looks quite reddy brown in the tube, on my lips it pulls pink. When I first applied this colour, I did find the colour faded a little unevenly but once I had topped it up a couple of times it left a stain so that I could just apply balm to 'refresh' the colour.
Someone asked me whether the Lip Tars are moisturising and from my initial experience with these I would say no. I needed to use a lip balm throughout the day whilst wearing these in order for my lips to remain comfortable. I found that the Hurraw Black Cherry tinted lip balm worked really well with these as it disguised any colour fade as well as moisturising my lips. Of course, this is an unfair time of year to be judging the comfort factor as we've had snow this week and it has been so cold that our heating has been on almost constantly.
I love both colours. Pretty Boy is a really fun pink but I imagine I will get the most use from Strumpet. I haven't tried mixing the colours yet but I would like to give it a try. I'm also tempted to buy one of the other more muted Lip Tars such as Memento to experiment with colour mixing.
These OCC Lip Tars came from www.cutecosmetics.co.uk where they cost £7.99 each. The Hurraw Black Cherry tinted lip balm is also available from Cutecosmetics and costs £3.45.
Disclosure: These items were sent to me without cost for review purposes

My IMATS Experience in Pictures
Yesterday I trotted off to Alexandra Palace for my very first trip to IMATS. I had a fantastic day and spent much of it wandering around with my lovely friend, Sparklz and Shine. I met up with old and new faces, attended talks (more of that later) and took in as much of the atmosphere as possible. In terms of shopping, I was a bit of a failure having bought only one item. I'm still kicking myself about this now. I had fully intended to go back this morning to rectify this until I started panicking about the snow that fell overnight. Rather than dwell on it, I thought I would share my day in pictures.
Illamasqua were offering some incredible discounts and attracted crowds all day long. I made several attempts to get close to the counter but I'm lacking in the necessary shopping skills for this kind of action. I made up for it by having a lovely chat with Hayley from Illamasqua over lunch.
You will be unsurprised to learn that I made a beeline for Hakuhodo! It was amazing to be able to see and touch so many of their brushes. If money had been no object, I could have racked up a huge spend. Unfortunately, they were not offering a discount for IMATS so the prices were the same as those on the www.hakuhodousa.com website. The advantage of buying at the show, of course, were that you did not need to factor in shipping costs or the worry about customs charges. I bought one brush and wrestled with the idea of buying a few more. I actually spent a while looking at the numerous other brush makes on offer at the show, and I have to admit that buying Hakuhodo has rather spoiled me. I'm ashamed to admit that I turned a snobby little nose up at many of the alternatives. Champagne tastes and beer money as my Mother would probably say!
Louise Young at the PAM stand sharing some of her expert tips with a small crowd, including myself, Sparklz and Shine and The Make Up Fairy. Louise used her own Essential Eye palette and her brushes as you can probably see. It was a thrill to get such a personal audience with Louise and I took away many tips. Although the show is primarily aimed at makeup artists, I think you can gain plenty as a makeup consumer and general enthusiast.
Hopefully this picture will give you a general idea of the crowds at the show. It was busy everywhere as I arrived (around 10:30 on the Saturday) and I'm told this is pretty much peak time. Most of the stands were still accessible with the exception of Illamasqua and MAC Pro which were several people deep throughout the day. Many of the stands were also offering excellent show discounts. Having said that, I was quite disappointed at the Embryolisse discounts (I had planned to re-stock) as their prices still seemed to be higher than the cost of buying in France.
Helen swatched a number of the OCC lip tars and the pigmentation is amazing. I love the colours but I confess, I am a little nervous of them. I'd love to know if you think I missing out on a must have here?
The Real Techniques stand seemed to be attracting quite a bit of interest, especially with their IMATS discount. The brushes are beautifully soft and I toyed with the idea of getting one of the sets but none of the shapes really grabbed me enough to make a purchase.
This year's theme for the student competition was 'Wild Kingdom'.
This was one of the many items on display in the museum area and I was really taken with the detail on the face. From the crows feet to the slight stubble on the neck: I think it's these realistic touches which stop it from looking too cartoon-esque.
Koren had attracted a little crowd that were all wearing 3D glasses when I took this photograph. I confess, I was most mesmerised by the Hello Kitty brush belt.
This is Vincent de Monfreid for Makeup Atelier Paris working magic on his extraordinarily professional (and presumably very cold) model!
The model and artist above were stationed at the Mistair Ltd & Stageline Professional stand. I thought the shirt and tie detail on the model were amazing.
IMATS was a great experience and I'm already turning my mind to 2013. Of course, next year I will definitely be armed with a list!
Disclosure: I received a press pass for the event so admission was free. I paid for my own transport to the event.
