After the fantastic response to my recent saturation post, I was inspired to take action. Last night I got out several boxes (and shockingly a bin bag) and opened up my makeup drawers, determined to be ruthless in editing my collection.
I now have a two boxes full of products that I will be offering to family and friends, anything that is left over will go to Give and Makeup. I was stunned by how much went straight into the bin pile: lots of old lipsticks, glosses and eyeshadows that weren't fit to keep or pass on. I also discovered two lipsticks worth of Back 2 MAC items, I just have to work out whether there are any lipsticks I might actually need. A new Modesty lipstick maybe?
Of course, I wasn't capable of being completely ruthless. I filled a box with items that I really ought let go but can't quite face yet. This is where I felt especially grateful for the advice from Sunday's post. I have packed my 'Maybe' items into a box which I've slipped under my bed, not to be touched for a month. If I don't miss them, they can go to a new home. I'm secretly hopeful that my interest in them them will be renewed when I re-open the box, so that I can pretend they are new goodies to enjoy!
Thank you all so much for taking the time to read and comment on that post. I really wasn't sure how it would be received but it was a relief to know that I wasn't alone in my anxiety. It also gave me a number of ideas for new posts too.
VERY brave and productive, at least the recievers will appreciate your giveaways. Geeta
ReplyDeleteThanks Geeta, I'm really looking forward to sharing everything with my friends.
DeleteGreat! You sound a lot better, too. A lot less stressed about the whole thing. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Odyssey. I definitely feel a lot lighter for having tackled it!
DeleteGreat job! Don't expect to be completely ruthless when you first start working on culling! It's a process. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteI hope I get more bold as I go on. I was proud of myself for actually managing to bin things, that feels like a big step forward :D
Delete*standing ovation*
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks so much for introducing me to Give and Makeup -- all the shelters/charities near me specify sealed products only so this looks wonderful <3
Thanks Kate, I'm really pleased that the link to Give and Makeup was useful, I didn't realise other places specified sealed products. I always feel much better getting rid of things when I know they're going to a good home.
DeleteI need to follow your lead and do a cull as well. *shivers* Mascara and foundation is about the only thing I allow myself to put in the bin at the moment, but I KNOW there's a LOT more that needs to go. You've inspired me.
ReplyDeleteI think it's quite daunting to start off with. I was especially proud of myself for binning things. When I faced the fact that I would never use a particular item again and knew it wasn't fit to pass on, the bin became the logical choice!
DeleteI find it totally refreshing to have a good clear out, I did last month, sold some on ebay, gave some away, now I need to do this with my nail polish. I like the idea of a maybe box to rediscover again too.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to opening the box again in a months time!
DeleteWell done! I threw out a lipstick and two eyeshadows...now I want that lipstick back BUT too late, the colour was nice but it was kind of cheap and smelt like it too! I don't have that much really ;)
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you're definitely better off without it. Maybe you can look for a similar shade in a formula you really like?
DeleteCongratulations! I hope it feels good to play with your "new" edited collection. And I bet you do end up exploring your "Maybe" box--and having fun with it. Hurray!
ReplyDeleteUh, and now that you have less makeup, you may need to buy something new... ;)
