Makeup as a Mood Lifter

Today, I put my face on. I realise this probably sounds like nothing out of the ordinary but after a week of being bare faced, it feels pretty good! I've not had the time in the morning or felt in the mood to bother for the last week and it's interesting to reflect on what this does to my mood. Somehow it feels easier to wallow in misery (and considerably easier to slink off to bed) with no makeup on whereas a bit of makeup makes me feel more confident and positive that I can tackle what the day throws at me.

So, next time I feel like not bothering, I will remind myself that making that little bit of effort is really worth it in the end.

I wondered if you ever go through spates of not wearing makeup or do you always make a point of wearing it come what may? Do you find that wearing makeup gives you a confidence boost or are you the same person, with or without?

* Clinique Intense Chubby Stick in Heftiest Hibiscus is a press sample, the delicious macaroons that came with it might have put a smile on my face too. Don't tell my diet I said that!

  1. If I spend a week with no makeup on it means that I'm either sick of very depressed. In both cases, making the effort to do it again is usually very helpful and makes me feel much better!

  2. Good to see you are back! I find that if I am not bothering with hair makeup etc that it is a good sign to myself that I am in a bit of a trough on the spirits front.

My best mood lifter is exercise, in particular running up and down the same hill over and over again! Twisted eh?

  3. It definitely lifts my spirits and makes me feel more confident and put together when I'm wearing makeup - today for example I am sick and in work looking wretched with not a scrap of slap! This post has inspired me to at least go an put on some BB Cream and lip balm as I know it will make me feel a bit better xo

  4. Personally my make-up sort of reflects how I'm feeling. I'm always wearing something when I leave the house but when I'm in a slump I just slap it on and hope it doesn't look too dreadful. When I start feeling better I put a bit more effort in but still keep things very simple. By the time I start using lots of colour and bothering with things like contouring I know things are looking up.

  5. I am not me without my face. I'd have to be confined to my bed with no visitors to even consider not wearing it. I look old and ill without make up so whilst I am always old if I'm not ill I'm sure as hell not going to look as if I am! At the moment I can be found in the kitchen at 6.20am, hair done, face on, frying bacon - that's how important it is!

  6. Your post is well-timed for me--I've been ill for the past week and haven't worn a lick of makeup. And I've looked dreadful! This morning I thought about makeup for the first time in 6 or 7 days. I weakly smeared on an RMS Lip Shine but it looked pretty bad against my pale, blotchy sick skin. So, definitely: if I'm not up to wearing makeup, it means I'm really ill or depressed. I can't wait to feel well enough to put some on. That'll mean I'm back to my usual self. Glad you're feeling brighter! Makeup is a powerful force. ;)

  7. Having made the decision not to wear make up every day when I started work, I can still happily go without. I do specially wear it to go to meetings though, to make me feel bolder and more the part. It's definitely a big boost. x

  8. thats a beautiful colour! and yes it is mood lifter, I tend to get stuck in routines though so I try easy changes like a different lipstick everyday :)

  10. I usually never wear anything other than mascara on my days off work to give my skin a break. My job requires me to wear a full-face of makeup everyday. But when I was on vacation over the summer I didn't wear a speck of makeup. When I got home I was super excited to sit in front of the mirror again and doll myself up. It's really become a part of my routine in the mornings.

  12. That is a beautiful color!

It really depends on the reason why I'm not wearing makeup - If I'm in a hurry to get out of the house because I just worked out, then it's not a big deal for me. But if I had the time and I laid in bed, then that's a sign I'm probably not feeling 100% that day.

I agree that makeup definitely boosts my confidence. It's just a feeling that I look my best so I can be my best. Even though I can still be my best without it, it's more of a mentality of seeing myself smiling back in the mirror.

  13. I generally feel more like myself if I'm wearing makeup, especially since not doing so tends to bring comments that I look wan, tired or sick. Of course, if I'm not feeling very positive, I can have a tendency to overwork the look I'm doing and end up looking sick or tired anyway. Balance is key, I guess.

  14. Nurses know that when a patient starts asking for a comb, brush, mirror and makeup, she's starting to feel better :) Personally, I never leave the house without the works, only omitting mascara when allergy season hits, or one of my too frequent eye infections. I look old and tired without my makeup. While DH doesn't mind - he's known me for over forty-five years, after all - I prefer to preserve some illusions among my friends and neighbors. There's something very zen-like in going through the same motions every morning. It's a calming ritual that sets me up for the day.
