Desert Island FoTD and Colour Ramblings

I discovered this FoTD post sat in drafts today and thought now would be a good moment to share. The products I am wearing are items I picked out for my Beauty Spotlight Desert Island visit. Based on my hair, these pictures were taken a while ago but the items I used remain firm favourites, irrespective of hairstyle.

I was having a moan today on Twitter about my habit of wasting time filling up virtual shopping baskets, only to talk myself out of the spend. I know I'm not alone in doing this but it is an incredibly frustrating habit. I was eyeing up the Clarins lipsticks that are currently reduced on Escentual, but had to concede that the colours I was looking at (Rouge Eclat in Pink Berry and Woodrose) bear a striking resemblance to about 50% of the lip colours I already own. I curse my own inner sensible side for refusing to allow more dupes for 'research purposes'.

Another reason for vetoing more lipstick purchases is my current obsession with what 'season' I might be. I suspect London MakeUp Girl's recent Sci/Art analysis has sparked a veritable tidal wave of similar curiosity. I am clueless about which colours genuinely suit my colouring. I have been told that my uniform of black and white aren't particularly flattering but knowing which colours don't suit me, hasn't particularly helped me deduce which do. I remain hopeful that pastels or yellow aren't the answer! Both Grace and Stiperstones have suggested I might be a Light Summer, so I have been looking at the appropriate colour recommendations on Pinterest. I rather like the suggested colours and have been messing about with coloured scarves that are similar to the colours in the swatches. This blue/green scarf is probably one of my favourites, not least because it matches the colours my streak has faded to.

I think the time has probably come for me to save some pennies and investigate who offers colour analysis locally, so that I can get a professional opinion. I will also be interested to hear whether my rapidly greying hair changes things in terms of what colours I should choose. Watch this space!

  1. Speaking of in the cart/out of the cart, Wisdom has been my in/out shopping cart item! :) When I see it in action I really want it, but as I peer down upon my taupe collection (it's a hoard), I feel I must restrain myself.

London Makeup Girl blog post of color matching is making me thinking about going for the process, too! I confess I'm worried I will find my wardrobe and makeup will be all wrong! D:

    1. You might surprise yourself and find your makeup is spot on. I do understand you fear though! I have a feeling that I'm better at picking out the right sort of makeup but I fail at clothes.

PS. Wisdom is very nice. I would give up many other taupe eyeshadows in favour of Wisdom ;)

  2. I do really like that scarf on you. Wait for Nikki to come back again - she's well worth the wait!

    1. Thanks Grace. I'm definitely going to hang on for Nikki to come back as I didn't like the sound of any of the systems offered by local analysts. Most seemed to offer a more generalised style service which is not what I'm after.

  3. Hi Barbara. Having looked at examples of soft summer, I'm not sure that I would fit the category. But I'm not very good at sussing this sort of thing out, so you never know!

  5. Hi Modesty Brown,
I am Alice and a mum of three little ones with a fixation for make up too! I could not help smiling when I read about your habit of filling up virtual shopping baskets...that is me as well! By the way the blue scarf enhances your beautiful eye colour! What about something coral? Or silver?

P.S. I deleted my previous comments simply because ...it was full of mistyped words! Sorry

  6. Hi Modesty Brown, I stumbled on your blog while reading Perilously Pale. Really like your writing style. You are certainly not alone filling up online shopping carts! Well, at least for you they remain in the cart. I find myself feeling more than a tinge of buyer's remorse these days :) Btw, I like your blue/green scarf. It looks strikingly matching with the color of your eyes.

  7. Do you have an iPhone or iPad? If so, there is an app called "Colour me beautiful" (there may be others, this is the one I have). I've done my colors as well as those of others and it seems pretty accurate. I think you are closest to a winter, with either a clear undertone or a cool undertone. It's hard to tell 100 percent from pictures, but I think you'd be better off with cooler colors and staying away from makeup and clothes with a yellow or orange cast.
