My Week in Pictures

Well, it's probably more like the last week and a half but let's not argue over a technicality. I know I've been rather quiet on the blogging front lately. Although theoretically I have more time to myself these days, with the constant round of viruses attacking the MB household, it's been hard to find the time or impetus to write. So, here's a little glimpse at what has been keeping me busy.

MissMB+birthday

It was Miss MB's 3rd birthday just over a week ago and as you can see, she celebrated in style. I still can't get over the fact that she's a little girl now and not a baby. When I first started blogging, Miss MB was only seven weeks old and I still remember my old Twitter avatar with her very fondly.

I'm not very good at baking but I think that cake is an absolute must for birthdays. I made this chocolate sponge cake following Mary Berry's recipe from the BBC website. It was actually very straightforward to make (easier still if you use a food processer, I imagine) and it tasted delicious.

Chocolate+Cake

I bleached a section of my hair weeks ago with the intention of adding some colour to it. I've only just got around to adding the colour and you can see the end result below.

Crazy Colour+Hot Purple2

Crazy Colour+Hot Purple3

I used Crazy Color in Hot Purple and this is the result of two applications. The first time I applied it, I was quite nervous so I diluted the colour with conditioner and applied for the time indicated on the bottle (15-30 mins). The colour didn't really take on this first try, instead it acted more like a toner on the bleached hair. The second time round, I added the colour neat and left it on for a couple of hours, wrapping the section of hair in clingfilm to prevent the dye from drying out. I was very pleased with the end result and may well brave adding another slice of colour in a more obvious position.

New shoes! I bought these boots from Dune to wear to hen do I went to over the weekend. I'm absolutely thrilled with them and I'm also surprised by how comfy they are to walk in. I expected my feet to be sore after walking around London in them on their first wear but there wasn't a blister in site. I suspect I will be rather precious about avoiding scuffing them for the next month or so.

Dune+Putty+Boots

Son1's class have been studying Viking's as their topic this term, and today they had to go in dressed in costume. So, once again my creative skills have been put to the test. I like to try and avoid buying new things when it comes to these sorts of costumes as I always feels it's a bit wasteful, particularly if they are items that that won't be worn again. I had a rummage around in the local charity shops and managed to find a beige top men's that I cut up to make an over-shirt and makeshift leg bindings, but unfortunately I couldn't find anything that would work as a cloak.

Coffee+Dye

Whilst looking through my stash of bedding for something suitable, I came across an old cot-sized white flannel sheet and had a light bulb moment. I thought it would be interesting to have a go at dyeing it and discovered via Google that coffee can be used to dye fabric. It turned out to be a rather effective way of getting rid of some ancient coffee grounds and a minging jar of Nescafe too! You can cut up a pair of tights to make a filter for coffee grounds and I wish I had discovered this before I made the first batch of dye above.

If you have access to a fixative like alum or you are able to pre-treat the material with vinegar or washing soda beforehand, you would be able to achieve a darker shade than I was able to. I'm still happy with my handiwork though and I rather like the random darker patches as it adds character.

Viking2

Here's my son modelling the finished outfit. I used an old plaited leather belt of mine to tie around his waist. He's wearing a maroon undershirt (read old pillowcase with head and arm holes) and the black trousers from his Dracula outfit. I also used some brown laces to hold up the 'leg bindings'. I am extremely pleased that I opted for a budget outfit as multiple items have disappeared during the day.

And finally...

After years of saying I would never watch the films, I finally succumbed to the Twilight series. I have also developed a new crush. And, before you ask, yes I am ashamed of myself. Hoooowwwllllll!

My Catwoman Converse and a Personal Ramble

Thanks to some excellent encouragement following this post, I decided to ignore sensible and go with my not-so-grown-up side. I'm very pleased I did as the Catwoman Converse are a thing of beauty (hello Cadbury's purple laces) and make my feet very happy! I bought them from Schuh online where they cost £50.

I'm going to be a bit less cheery for a minute now. I know quite a few of you follow me on Twitter and are probably already aware that things are still very difficult at school for my eldest son. We've had one good day this week and although I'm crossing my fingers that today will be ok, he didn't have the best start which rarely bodes well. I'm fighting the urge to pour my heart out on here but it's not really appropriate.

Unfortunately, I'm struggling to think about anything else at the moment and my usual blogging time is being eaten up with reading and online research to try and find ways to support my son through this difficult patch. I will endeavour to keep going but I may be a little quieter than normal. Hopefully my more chirpy side will return soon. In the meantime, I'll keep flashing my new shoes.

My Current (Random) Wishlist

I honestly thought I would have loads of extra time for posting now that Miss MB is at nursery two mornings a week. I was clearly delusional! The six hours I gained were swiftly eaten up with cleaning the house and other unsavoury chores. My spending money has taken a battering too with the nursery fees to pay, leaving me with very little to spend on the 'pretties'.

So, to cheer myself up, I thought I would compile a little wishlist. I can see that there has been a definite shift in my spending habits lately as my list is a mix of beauty and other things. Wonders never cease!

navy converse
Navy Converse
This is actually a bit of a lie. What I really want are a pair of the Catwomen Converse but sense (and the school run) tell me the navy would be a better investment. After years of avoiding navy, my wardrobe seems to be full of it, so I really do require some footwear that isn't black.

Illamasqua Magnetism lipstick
I have been crushing on this lipstick for ages. I knew I had to have it when I first heard the description and then London MakeUp Girl's tweet sealed the deal. I may wait till it's available through ASOS.

Lotus Wei

Lotus Wei Inner Peace Energy Mist
I came across the Lotus Wei mists and elixirs when I visited the Content Beauty store over the summer. The names sound so appealing and I've lost count of how many times I've wished I had the Inner Peace mist in the last week. The return to school has been bumpy to say the least!

Trollbeads
I finally purchased a bracelet to put my beads on. I bought the leather bracelet in beige and my two beads look rather lonely on it. I'd really like to get some more artisan made beads and I have been stalking Summerday's store on Dawanda and Suzielaws's store on Etsy for the last month or so.

Ilia Lipstick in Ink Pot
I know I probably don't need any more lipsticks but when I spied this via the ILIA beauty e-newsletter, it grabbed me (look to the bottom right of the mood board). I'm positive this is the shade that Sasha's Mum recommended I keep my eyes peeled for too. What's not to love about purple?!

More Kjaer Weis
I've wanted to buy some more Kjaer Weis pieces for ages. On my shopping list are the Blossoming cream blusher and eyeshadow in Charming. I imagine I will purchase both in the pan form. If you're in the UK, you can buy Kjaer Weis from Slowfashionhouse.com

pirates

Pirates: An Adventure with Scientist on DVD
I am a child and I am not ashamed!!

Care to share what's on your wishlist at the moment?

A Wardrobe Hoarder

I'm going to go off topic again today. I spoke last week about my inability to part with items of makeup and I think this probably carries on from there. I spent yesterday decluttering. It's something I try to do quite regularly. I find that cupboards and storage filled with 'stuff' makes me uneasy. However, I've come to the conclusion that, although I want to be tidy and streamlined, a hoarder lurks inside. Inside my wardrobe to be precise.

My wardrobe is home not only my clothes but also to my makeup and shoes. I suppose I put my makeup in there just to ensure I go in there daily. For my wardrobe is home to a large collection of clothes and shoes that I will most probably never wear again. I'm quite good at getting rid of day to day stuff when it's worn out but it's the special items, the treasures that I just can't let go. Even though my sensible side knows I'm being a silly.

I'll start first with the shoes. I always loved shoes. My entire family has a bit of an Imelda Marcos thing going on. I loved nothing better than shopping for shoes pre-children but pregnancy did something strange to my feet. To start with I assumed it was fluid and hoped my feet would return to normal but I've been waiting for almost six years now so I accept that my feet have changed shape for good. All my precious shoes that I wore to special events sit gathering dust as they just don't fit me any more. Part of me knows that I should just give them up but there's also another part of me that is hoping that by some miracle my feet will shrink when (and if) I eventually lose weight.

Which brings me on to the clothes. About 70% of the clothes hanging on my rail don't fit me anymore. Some of them are just tantilisingly out of reach but a good deal of them are from the fleeting moments of thin in my life. I can't recall whether I've spoken about this on here but I've had a life long battle with my weight. I started my first diet at 12 years old. I have been everything from a size 18 to a size 10 and back again. This was a problem prior to children but my poor relationship with food saw me pile on weight with my first two children. I didn't put too much weight on last time but I'm still not at a happy weight and failing to find the motivation to start a healthy eating plan again.

Smuggled at the back of my wardrobe I have a selection of my favourite occasion dresses. Including my wedding dress. They range in size from 10 to 14, in fact it's the wedding dress that is a 14 so ironically the one I'd fit into first but I'm not sure I'll ever be attending an event that call for a bridal gown!! These dresses have survived endless culls. I do wonder if it's not healthy to hang on to them. I have happy memories attached to these items but looking at them does make me feel a little sad too. With the exception of the wedding dress of course.

I'm posting this in the hope that outing myself might act as motivation. Whether it's to get rid of these things or kick start a diet I don't know. But I did also wonder if I'm not alone in this strange habit. I know I'm not the only box hoarder so maybe I'm not alone in my wardrobe hoarding either? What do you do? Are you dedicated to streamlining your wardrobe or do hang onto special items 'just in case'?
