My Attempt at Re-Creating the RBR Santa Ana Look

RBR_SantaAna_WEB

As soon as I saw the latest Rouge Bunny Rouge look, Santa Ana, I knew I had to have a go at re-creating it. It's bold but seemed relatively easy to follow in terms of products. You can see a full breakdown and description of placement in Perilously Pale's post here.

I don't own all of the products used (as shown in the image above) so I substituted where necessary with products that I hope are of a similar colour or texture. The red lipstick - Raw Silence was a tough one, as I don't think I have anything quite the same colour or with the same creamy finish. I'm really tempted to buy the Selena Eye Kohl used in the look as the MAC pencil I used as a substitute seems to be reaching the end of it's useful life.

Here are the products I used:

Santa+Ana+attempt13

RBR Face Contour Brush // RBR Blusher Brush // Max Factor Second Skin and Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation mixed // Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer // MUFE HD Powder // MAC Bronzer in Golden // Laura Mercier Pink Tourmaline Mosaic Shimmer Bloc to highlight tops of cheeks and brow bone

Santa+Ana+attempt14

Sigma E25 Brush // MAC 239 // RBR Large Shader // MAC 219 // MAC Mystery Eye Kohl // RBR Eyeshadows in Umber Firefinch, Unforgettable Oriole and Olive Violeteare

Santa+Ana+attempt16

Lips prepped with BECCA Lip Butter // MAC Liner in Cherry // Max Factor Colour Elixir in Ruby Tuesday // Tom Ford lipstick in Smoke Red // MAC lip brush

For the eyes, I used two of the three eyeshadows as used in the Santa Ana look and I substituted Golden Rhea with Unforgettable Oriole as the base lid colour. As I don't have the Loose Glitter Pigments in Sleeping Under the Mandarin Tree, I used a small amount of the Laura Mercier Shimmer Bloc on the brow bone. I also applied some to the high points of my cheeks. Highlighter isn't listed in the product breakdown but I can definitely see a sheen on the tops of the cheek.

I primed my skin with Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer and used a mix of Max Factor Second Skin and Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation. As you may note, all three of these items are on my list of products to use up! I used a little bit of MUFE HD Powder on the T-zone. To be honest, I prefer a less matte base on my skin and would probably have opted for a tinted moisturiser had I not been trying to copy the look.

I tried out two different lipsticks to try and replicate the colour of Raw Silence. Neither are perfect, so of course this gives me the go ahead to buy a new red lipstick without guilt (don't say anything!). Here's how it looks with Max Factor Colour Elixir lipstick in Ruby Tuesday...

And now, with Tom Ford lipstick in Smoke Red...

Right, I'm off out to do the second school run of the day wearing this look. Let me know if you have a go at copying this look yourself. Santa Ana will launch at Zuneta tomorrow and my sources tell me there will be a special exclusive gift with any purchase of Rouge Bunny Rouge to celebrate. Shopping lists at the ready girls!

Disclosure: Some of the items I used here were sent to me as press samples but not in connection with this launch (and not exclusively RBR). There is a fairly even mix of purchased items and press samples.

  1. The shape of your cupid's bow makes you look like a 1920s starlet. Love it!

  2. That is great look. I am inspired to try something similar myself as I have a night out planned (I have a tragic social life!). I have had my eye on Raw Silence for some time now, maybe tomorrow ...

I will be waiting with baited breath for the GWP. Do you find the RBR mascara comes off with normal cleanser or do you have to use an eyemakeup remover with it?

    1. Hi Claire, I'm looking forward to seeing what the GWP will be too. I've never tried the RBR mascara although I knew I'd seen a review before. Here's Makeup Picnic's review and this was a guest review on Drivel About the Frivol. I hope they're useful :)

  3. Hi there, Jane. You look beautiful, I especially love the Tom Ford on you and your eyes are appropriately smoky and gorgeous. I actually gave this look a go in the morning and made a couple of substitutions. I used Burberry Pale Barley as the base color, used a black Chanel liner in Ebene smudged. I don't have a great red for this look (boy am I lucky I have Raw Silence on it's way to me already!) so am using a Burberry lip cover in Union Red blotted way down. Doesn't look right, though.

I see I am wholly incapable of following simple written directions! I see you are much better at following directions. :-) I hope RBR posts a video of this so I can work with some more visual clues.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing what you used Jane, it sounds lovely! I bet you can't wait for Raw Silence to arrive.

There will be a video of the look and I should get the code tomorrow to post it. I'm really looking forward to seeing it done visually too, particularly to see how much they line around the eyes.

  4. You look amazing! Don't you love running errands wearing looks like these? LOL People must think we are odd some days. The things I've been testing picking my daughter up off the bus I'm sure has caused the bus driver to wonder! I want to recreate this look as well but I am somehow TOTALLY lacking in the products listed. I may still give it a go. ;-)

    1. I often come home and realise I've got mismatching finger nails or cheeks! It's a good job I embraced my crazy lady a long time ago ;)

  5. Ruby Tuesday looks so beautiful on you! I've had Raw Silence on my wishlist for ages so that special exclusive gift just might be the thing to make me buy it, finally. x

    1. I'd love to see your interpretation of this look Replica! I thought my lips looked wonky but they seem ok in the pictures. I did a red lip on the BECCA course and was impressed that I had a fairly steady hand. I've since realised that I often prop my hands on my chin to steady myself when applying makeup which I suspect helps quite a bit xx

  7. You look gorgeous! Both reds are lovely, Ruby Tuesday is quite close to the Santa Ana look but I think I prefer the TF Smoke Red, I love the depth and intensity of the shade.

    1. I do prefer the Smoke Red too Meeta. It's not as true to the Santa Ana look but I think the colour has added dimension. What a shame it is no more!

  10. I've been toying with the idea of going to Sephora or Ulta and asking for help picking out a red lip for fall. I don't own a red b/c I've never been comfortable with something that bright, but I think I might be ready to have a go at it...if a knowledgeable rep will help me get the right undertones for my coloring.
