Crimson Lips and Neutral Eyes

I have been taking my makeup inspiration from some unusual places lately. I'm forever on a quest to find something to watch on Netflix to justify the subscription (easier said than done) and my recent guilty pleasure has been re-watching my Agatha Christie favourites. For me, Miss Marple wins in the battle of the Christie sleuths but the maquillage in Poirot makes up for the lack of suspense.

This particular eye look was inspired by Henrietta Savernake's makeup in The Hollow, played by Megan Dodds. You can see a good still of her eye makeup here. The character wore a lovely pale pearlised eyeshadow on the brow bone with a little on the lid too. It was subtle but very pretty and immediately made me think of the Guerlain Rue de Rivoli palette. I used the iridescent cream/pink on the centre of the lid and the brow bone and a mix of greys and fawn colours in the crease. I lined (very wonkily) using the Hourglass Script liner. In retrospect, I wish I had opted for a gel liner for a more matte finish.

I chose to go for a more statement lip than Henrietta wore, primarily because I had a new lipstick to play with but also because the colour and finish felt quite 'Poirot' appropriate. I bought this lipstick in a recent Avon order and it's in the shade Matte Crimson. As soon as I swatched it, I worried that I'd picked out a MAC Rebel dupe. I've swatched them side by side and was relieved to see that they're not identical but probably a little close considering how often I opt for such a deep, opaque colour. I'm pleased to report the formula isn't a lip-husking disaster either.

Do you ever take inspiration from looks you've seen on TV or films? Or do you have a favourite era makeup wise?

  1. What a coincidence! A couple of days ago, a Megan Dodds look in an old Spooks episode inspired me to dig out my favourite highlighter and pile it on. - I have the palette and will try this look tomorrow. It looks lovely on you!

    1. Moppe, you have of course given me reason to start watching Spooks on Netflix! May I ask what your favourite highlighter is?

    2. It's Shiseido's Accentuating Color Stick in S3 Glistening Flush. There is also S6 Champagne Flush, which is yellower than Glistening, which is more pink. I love these sticks, but can't find them on the Shiseido website anymore... I think I will try to see if they have some other colours left at a counter, the texture is lovely!
Don't watch too much in a row, though. Gives you a really bleak outlook on life! ;o)

  2. Lovely colours! TV and film are probably my favourite places to get inspiration as I like seeing things in context and the characters/story behind the looks even if it doesn't appear they are wearing much.

    1. I'm very pleased to hear I'm not alone Meeta. Another of my guilty TV pleasure is Bones, and part of the appeal for me is admiring their beautiful face-enhancing-but-subtle makeup!

  3. I absolutely LOVE that shade you have on your brow bone. I wish I could buy it on its own!

    1. Thanks Charlie! That eyeshadow is the reason I have kept this palette. If only I could find something similar in a single pan. There's a Chantecaille shade that sounds quite similar (Perle, from memory) but SpaceNK never have stock so I've failed to swatch it so far!

  4. That eye look is really lovely :) I have to say I always found Miss Marple a bit freaky, but that might just be me ;) xx

    1. :-O Miss Marple freaky?! We can no longer call each other friends... :D

Makeup wise, Jane Marple and I have very little in common but I have to admire the brain. It's Joan Hickson all the way for me of course, none of this recent nonsense!

    1. The makeup in poirot is wonderful, isn't it? I found myself paying way too much attention to the lipstick at certain points!

  6. Let's hear it for the Christie fans! I've always loved the attention to wardrobe and decoration details in the Poirot TV series. How I envied Miss Lemon's wardrobe!

  7. I love the eyeshadow combination - the mixture of grey and fawn colours, really pretty! Favourite era make-up wise for years was the 70's - loved all the shimmer and lipgloss - now I just opt for whatever makes me look vaguely human!

    1. Ooh, good choice Jenny. I instantly think of Farrah Fawcett when I think of 70's makeup! I'm with you on the vaguely human too.

  8. I do get a lot of make up inspiration tips from Japanese period dramas and old French films. Those fabulous ladies in Poirot are also inspiring for me as is Dot Branning! Sadly, actually getting a look to work is always tricky :(

    1. Your comment about old French films has sparked a memory of a black and white French film that I watched a very long time ago. It was super creepy and I have a suspicion that Sharon Stone was involved in a remake. I'm going to have to hit google to find out what it was now!

  9. Funny, I have been watching a lot of Netflix too and loved The Hunger Games. I also loved the UK TV Series Accused, especially the episode with Sean Bean in drag! I admired his MAC makeup collection and application. Yet his acting was so good, I forgot he was Sean Bean and just loved the storyline. Was I inspired by his makeup? Yes, I wear more color shadows! LOL

    You look classy and lovely!

    1. You know, that was one of the few episodes of the Accused that I haven't watched. I was nervous about whether I could watch Sean Bean do drag. I shall have to see if I can find it on Netflix now ;)

  10. Lovely.

I went for a visit once to QMW at Charterhouse square. Was far more excited to see the building used as Whitehaven Mansions than the visit round the labs.

  12. I recently discovered Sons of Anarchy on Netflix and my family hardly didn't see me for the almost three weeks it took me to go through the three seasons (of five). Not so much for the make up tips, I'm afraid, but for so many other things you won't mind that after a while!
