My Tangle Teezer Woes

Some time ago I bought a Tangle Teezer. I bought it in the hope that it would be much better for my hair than my usual paddle brush, especially as I am guilty of brushing my hair when wet. It never really felt like it had de-tangled my hair properly though. The top layer would feel ok but it would still feels knotted underneath, especially at the back. I would lift up sections at the back to brush through, despite this my hair would never feel completely smooth.

I've been using it for months now and my hair has continued to feel worse and worse. It feels almost matted at the pack which isn't pleasant. I attributed this to the fact that my daughter has a terrible habit of pulling on my hair and occasionally biting it! It wasn't until I tweeted tonight about the state of my hair and being disappointed with my Tangle Teezer that I discovered that it might be the brush itself that is at fault.

It turns out other people have had problems with the Tangle Teezer including Fab Fingertips. I do wonder whether it might be due to hair type as I know so many people get on with it brilliantly. My hair is quite fine and fragile, it's also prone to breakage so I wonder if it might be better suited to stronger hair. I presumed the only solution would be to have my hair cut back into a bob (the damage starts quite high at the back) but Soraya from the Powder Rooms has recommended that I try the Philip Kingsley Elasticizer before resorting to the scissors. I will be putting an order in this evening to see if I can salvage something from the wreckage.

What are your experiences with the Tangle Teezer? Are you a fan or have you discovered that it doesn't suit your hair either?

  1. I don't get on with my Tangle Teezer either, it just doesn't untangle my tangles at all! My hair is curly though so is prone to knotting but I expected much more from a brush that costs £11! xx

  2. Ive never tried this but I know a good old paddle brush works well and lots of conditioner on wet hair.

  3. I agree that I'm not entirely convinced of it's detangling abilities through all the hair as the bristles are short but I like it for generally smoothing the hair. I wish it had a handle as I find I use it less and end up just using a normal brush.

For detangling my hair when wet I use a Boots wide tooth detangling comb - it has slightly rounded ends which I find doesn't snag so much.

Also the Elasticizer is great stuff, good for getting smoother hair.

  4. You maybe onto something there about the Tangle Teezer. My hair dresser uses it on me and recommended to buy it for use at home. To be honest, it looked very harsh and damaging. When I looked at how she used it on me, the there was so much of my hair accumulated on the Tangle Teezer, so much more than normal. My hair is brittle, coarse and I didn't want more damage and was skeptical about buying it. After reading this post, glad I did.

Good old wide toothed comb does the trick of detangling for me.

  5. I've been meaning to pick one up (we share similar hair sins.) I know it really works for Adrienne from The Sunday Girl but I worry it might not get along with my super thick hair.

  6. I bought one for my daughters and have largely stopped using it on them. My 5 year old has masses of thick curly hair and it takes an age with the TT, largely because you have to work layer by layer, even when it is wet and full of conditioner. It works better or her nearly 3 year old sister, another curlilocks, as her hair is still somewhat 'baby' hair. I have tried innumerable products for my oldest, really wanted something natural and various acronym free but have found that so far the unpronounceable chemic stuff does the job much bether. At the moment, I am using Aussie Miracle Moist shampoo and Frizz Treatment 3- Minute Miracle on her and it is fantastic! It smoothes all the frizzes from the curls and the breakages from the elastic bands and hair that gets tangled in clips. And it is cheap! Might be worth a try as well- I picked up the travel sizes in both to try and bought bottles 3 days later...

  7. I like mine, it does help with my extremely thick hair, but I hate the shape - it falls from my hands at least 5 times every time I properly brush my hair. Nevertheless I stopped using any other brush. And mine is pink too! :)

  9. It saved my hair after a trip outside when it was very windy, hair rubbed on the collar of my coat and I ended up with a very large knot, that was detangled with the tangle teezer.
I now only use it to brush my hair before shampooing, otherwise I only use a standard bristle brush, as I fear the quite large rigid plastic bristles might damage my very thin and damaged hair.

  10. I'm a HUGE fan of the TT! I suffered through many a years of pulling, tugging and tears before finding out brushing doesn't have to hurt. I mainly use it before washing my hair; this way I won't end up with 5 million furballs down my drain and hair is easier to wash. I don't use this for styling or anything but for pre- and post hairwash nothing beats it! I do wish the handle was better balanced; being left-handed I feel this brush like so many tools mainly cater to right-handed folks. So that's what I'd improve on.

  11. best thing for me is a seamless wide tooth comb working from tips of hair up, an oil like argan oil and/or detangler spray x

  12. I really get on with the TT, works well with my long thick hair. I do however use it alongside a usual paddle brush.

  13. I love my tangle teezer, I find it works so much better & is much less painful to use than any other brush or comb (wide-toothed, detangling or otherwise!).

  14. I have to say it's the worst hairbrush I've ever used, my gorgeous glossy hair is a frazzled mess from using this blinking Tangle Teezer. I've had more split ends in the 3 weeks of using it than I normally get in 6 months, back to my good old Denman hairbrush.

  15. It works really well for me. Less gets pulled out than usual and I don't have much hair so just brush through the outside, then inside and I'm done.

  16. The TT didn't work for me either after wanting it for so long I was very disappointed. I have thick coarse hair & it simply doesn't go through it at all. It's redeeming feature is its great on my children's hair.

  17. Just read this as all my hair has broken off at the back too. It matts at the nape of my neck and has basically split half way down since using the TT. I've just used my old faithful wide tooth comb and about half the hair came out compared to the TT. Bin!

  18. I got one for my daughter who is 5 and developmentally delayed. She has very long fine hair that tangles easily and combing it is a battle. I LOVE this brush. For the first time in her life I can brush her hair, wet or dry, and she no longer screams and pulls away. I still use a regular brush to pull it up into a pony or braids as the TT is difficult to hold while managing to hold her hair. I Love it and wish I had had it when I was younger. It has been a dream for my little girl.
