OCC Lip Tars in Pretty Boy and Strumpet

OCC+Pretty+Boy+Strumpet1

I had a sudden inexplicable yearning for bright pink lipsticks this time last week, so when I was offered the chance to try a couple of the Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars, I thought I would go bold. I was initially tempted by Anime, a 'so bright it's almost neon' pink but I knew from my experience with MAC's Girl About Town lipstick that I can feel quite self-conscious if I go too bright. So, instead I chose Pretty Boy which is still bright but wearable. I also chose Strumpet, a darker reddy grape colour, I would be lying if I said that I wasn't swayed by the name!

Although I hadn't tried the OCC Lip Tars before, I knew from reading reviews that a little goes a very long well. I armed myself with a lip brush and squeezed out only a tiny blob. The pigmentation is indeed very impressive! I found it a little tricky to get a sharp outline but I'm not very skilled at application with a lip brush.

I had been warned about possible feathering and I was careful not to overload my lips with product however, I did spot that throughout the day the colour did creep a little into my fine lines. You get an idea of what happens from the edges of the swatches above. I'm not sure whether a coloured lip liner or one of the reverse lip liners would work best to prevent this happening.

PRETTY BOY

Pretty Boy is exactly the kind of girly hot pink I was looking for. It's blue toned and bright, but not so bright that I feel that I've becoming walking lips. I did the school run wearing this colour and when my eldest boy saw me his little face lit up and he said "Mummy, your lips are so pink. Is that lipstick?". I don't think I've seen him so excited about my makeup before!

STUMPET

Although Strumpet looks quite reddy brown in the tube, on my lips it pulls pink. When I first applied this colour, I did find the colour faded a little unevenly but once I had topped it up a couple of times it left a stain so that I could just apply balm to 'refresh' the colour.

Someone asked me whether the Lip Tars are moisturising and from my initial experience with these I would say no. I needed to use a lip balm throughout the day whilst wearing these in order for my lips to remain comfortable. I found that the Hurraw Black Cherry tinted lip balm worked really well with these as it disguised any colour fade as well as moisturising my lips. Of course, this is an unfair time of year to be judging the comfort factor as we've had snow this week and it has been so cold that our heating has been on almost constantly.

I love both colours. Pretty Boy is a really fun pink but I imagine I will get the most use from Strumpet. I haven't tried mixing the colours yet but I would like to give it a try. I'm also tempted to buy one of the other more muted Lip Tars such as Memento to experiment with colour mixing.

These OCC Lip Tars came from www.cutecosmetics.co.uk where they cost £7.99 each. The Hurraw Black Cherry tinted lip balm is also available from Cutecosmetics and costs £3.45.

  1. Love the colours on you - especially strumpet. Think I'd be a bit worried about the colour bleeding on my lips though as they are always dry and I have a few pesky fine lines now. Still, very tempting though :)

    1. Hi Hannah. I think they're definitely worth a go, they do have an amazing selection of colours. There are some good tips below to stop the colour bleeding too.

  3. LOL, I've got to say that my purchase of Trollop was partly influenced by the name. If they did a Lip Tar called Slattern I'd be all over it ;)

These look great on you. I find a reverse lipliner works well with them, or else I line outside my lipline with a cream/flesh pencil from Illamasqua to stop bleeding and clean up the line.

    1. Haha that really made me laugh - maybe Revlon will come out with something called Slattern!

    3. Thanks Grace and Debbie. I hope someone does come out with a colour called Slattern :D. Thanks for the tip about the flesh pencil Grace, that would be great for tidying up any wonky lines.

  5. They both look great on you! I use an Urban Retreat Non Bleed Lip Pencil. Usually round the outside of my lipline having forgotten to apply before ;p

  6. You really picked two gorgeous colours! I have 4 OCC lip tars for now and Strumpet is my favourite but it looks much darker on me. I also wanted to get Memento to wear alone or use for mixing but they were out of stock at that time so I got Plum which looks hideous on me just by itself but it's great for toning down the brightness of the other lip tars. x

    1. It's interesting that Strumpet looks darker on you Klara. I have wondered recently if I'm loosing some of the natural pigment in my lips. Another joy of getting older, no doubt! Which other two colours do you have Klara? x

    2. I have noticed that sometimes certain lip colours look darker on me, Strumpet is more of a mix between purple, red and pink on my lips. And having less pigmented lips might not be such a bad thing - just another excuse for wearing more lipstick :)
I also have NSFW, a bright warm red, and Pageant, a bright pink which might be simlar to Pretty Boy. Pageant looks very bright on my lips, so I can only imagine how dramatic Anime is. Would love to get a coral lip tar next. x

  9. Great post Jane - finally someone showing that these can be worn in a normal/everyday fashion! So far I only thought that these were some type of special occassion makeup, glad to see that this isn't neccessarily the case!!!
Strumpet looks lovely on you btw! ;)

    1. Hi Tina! I had similar concerns to you but fascination got me in the end! Have you seen Grace London's post about the Tom Ford Violet Fatale dupe using two of the Lip Tars? - http://www.londonmakeupgirl.com/2011/10/occ-anime-katricia-lip-tars-alternative.html x

  10. Pretty Boy really pops and looks great on you. Would have loved to see the rest of the look too :-) Wouldn't have thought Strumpet would come out so pink, but it looks gorg. I really should try some lip tars, I've heard so many great things about them.

    1. I had sorted out a picture of the full look but forgot to include it! I think it makes them look more similar then they are though (Strumpet is on the left, PB on the right - piccie. Lovely to see you back btw. I was having a read of your new blog the other day :D x

  12. I also feel a bit self concious with brighter colours! The brightest I have is a pinky coral that's mainly for nights out but I'll pat some off if I feel like wearing it in the day, I feel comfortable and it's more wearable then. Love the look of Hurraw. The website is very interesting thanks for sharing x

  14. I prefer Pretty Boy - though i'm not sure how it would end up looking on me (maybe a bit gaudy?) I was really surprised to see Strumpets' transformation on your lips.

  16. I love your little man's cute comment, my one notices when I wear nail polish, or if I wear brighter eyeshadows.
I really like the look of Strumpet on you, I think you can probably get away with more bolder colours than me though xx

  17. Pretty Boy is pretty on you, but Strumpet is just amazing...if I had a color that looked that good on me, I'd wear it every single day. I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship with Lip Tars (which is why I still haven't reviewed them)...I love them when they first go on but find them drying pretty quickly. I haven't had issues with uneven fading, but have found that in order to get the color intensity I'm looking for, I often end up with bleeding (and no, I'm not using a lot of product). However, the more I use them the more they grow on me. Maybe I just needed a longer-than-usual learning curve with them. Regardless, those colors are both smashing on you, and I'm so glad you reviewed them!
