Delicate Hummingbird Colour Comparison

This post was inspired by Klara's comment on London MakeUp Girl's recent Rouge Bunny Rouge post. Klara was surprised by how dark Delicate Hummingbird appeared in the pan and I thought a comparison post might be useful. Especially as most of us only have online swatches and descriptions to go on when it comes to purchasing Rouge Bunny Rouge.

Delicate Hummingbird

Delicate Hummingbird
is described as 'a cool, dusky sugar-frosted plum, iridescent with pink shimmer'. I think the description is quite accurate but probably quite difficult to visualise. I do hesitiate to call it a plum without the extra descriptors as I tend to think of plum as quite warm and Delicate Hummingbird definitely leans cool.

It's a beautiful colour and one I often wear on it's own. I used to own a MAC colour which was incredibly similar called Flirty Number (I think it was a limited edition shade). I pulled out a few of the purples I own in order to show where it sits in terms of the depth of colour and undertones. First of all I have pictured the eyeshadow pans.

Trax and Delicate Hummingbird

In the swatch pictures below the eyeshadows are shown from left to right; MAC Beautiful Iris, Illamasqua Cancan, Delicate Hummingbird, MAC Trax, Purple Haze, Fig 1, the darkest shade from the Hourglass Exhibition duo. The colour across the top is the lightest shade from the Exhibition Duo. I know there are quite a few photos but I thought the different lighting conditions would actually be helpful. All of the pictures are clickable.

I think of all of the colours I compared it too, MAC Trax and the lighter colour from the Hourglass Exhibition duo are the most similar. Trax is the same depth of colour but it's more warm and red toned. I was surprised how similar the Exhibition eyeshadow is as they look very different in the pan. It's probably a little more pink than Delicate Hummingbired but they are both cool, dusky purple shades. I still don't know whether to call it plum or dark lilac. Neither seems quite right.

I've also included some photos of Delicate Hummingbird applied for completeness. The last photo is blurred but I think it shows the very beautiful iridescent shimmer. It's delicate but very pretty.

I hope this post is helpful to Klara and anyone else that is considering purchasing this eyeshadow.

  1. That's really helpful. I think the shade it reminds me the most of is Shale by MAC, which I used to dither over at MAC. I much prefer the texture of the RBR shadows.

  2. Shale has actually been on and off my list for a while. I agree that the RBR texture is much nicer though. Flirty number was similar in colour and shimmer but the shimmer in the MAC eyeshadow was chunky whereas I think Delicate Hummingbird is very refined.

  3. As you know, Shale is one of my all time favourite shadows and was the basis of my wedding make-up...these sort of shades seem to work best on my eyes. I think I'd really like delicate hummingbird, but I'm a tad nervous about buying more RBR.
This looks so pretty on though xxx

  4. I've been meaning to try RBR. I might just start with this shadow, it looks gorgeous in your swatch!

  5. Hi WBB! It's a shame your first experience has made you wary. This was my first RBR purchase and sealed the deal for me. I wish you were closer to me so you could have a play with my RBR collection for a bit of try before you buy! :)

Hi reene, as I said to Welsh Beauty Blog, this was my first RBR eyeshadow. It's a lovely colour and it makes for an easy eye look as I think it looks nice on it's own with a bit of liner.

  6. Jane, thank you so much for this post, it is extremely helpful! Delicate Hummingbird is I guess one of those hard to describe, "dirty" colours that I am always attracted to. It is very surprising how similar D. Hummingbird looks to the lightest shade of the Hourglass duo.
Also, thank you for comparing it to Fig.1 - the D. Hummingbird and Fig.1 are not similar, but I can imagine what the D Hummingbird looks like compared to Fig. 1 (which I have and like a lot).

    Thank you!
    x Klara

  8. @Klara: You are extremely welcome. I'm a fan of dirty and hard to describe colours too. I'm always attracted to them in eyeshadow and nail varnish form. It was a pleasure to do this post.

I agree, it's surprising how close the lightest shade from the Hourglass duo is to DH. You wouldn't expect it from looking at them in the pan. The Exhibition duo is another favourite of mine. It's great for a plummy smoky eye.

@Dempss01: You are welcome. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it and the colours came out well. I often find it hard to capture purples accurately but all the practice taking photos seems to be paying off.

Thank you for all the lovely comments,
    Jane x

  9. I love purples! I tend to do smokey purples than smokey greys. Trax is probably my fave since it pairs well with purples, greys, bronzes, and pinks.

  10. The swatch and the eye look are truly beautiful!!!
I imagine this shade works well for both pinker and more olive skintones, very wearable purple shade!
Damn, and here I thought I only wanted Solstice Halcyon, now, this gets added as well! Haha! ;)

  12. @Kajal Couture: I love Trax too. I just included it in my MAC eyeshadow favourites. I'm a bit fan of smokey purple looks too.

@Tina: Thank you! I love and I think you're right that it would work with a variety of colourings. Grace London has this and it looks beautiful with her pale olive colouring. You've actually given me an idea. My husband has totally different colouring to be, I maybe ought to use him for swatches too. I think he'll draw the line at eye looks though ;)

@ketoglutarat: Thank you so much for the link. It's very interesting to see the comparison to Shale.

  13. Hi Jane,
Got this for Christmas and I absolutely love it. Have a few new things to play with at the moment so am a little overwhelmed, but it's great to see how pretty it looks worn by you just on its own. Will try it tomorrow X

  14. Hi Jennifer, I hope you got on well with it. I really love and think there's definitely enough about the shade to wear on it's own. Jx
