Hakuhodo Yachiyo Medium Pointed Brush

I've been meaning to write about the Medium Pointed Yachiyo for a while. It can actually be a little tricky to review brushes, I know that I can't simply write 'it feels so soft and fluffy' about all of them! However, in this case it's certainly true.

I was surprised by how small this blusher brush is when it arrived. The handle and brush head are small and I suspect that lovers of long handles may not enjoy it. For me however, this brush is small and perfectly formed. The shape and size mean that I can be very precise with placement. I really like the tapered shape, it's not as pointed as a contour brush but it allows me to blend as I place the colour so that there are no hard edges.

I find it works well with all of my powder blushers, both pigmented and those that require layering. It goes without saying that it feels lovely too. It washes well, maintains it's shape and I experience no shedding.

I'm pleased to see that the brush is back in stock on the Hakuhodo website. It cost me $27 plus $12 for shipping. Unfortunately because of the changes in the Customs thresholds (see my post here), you may liable for VAT charge if ordering this from the UK.

  1. Lovely! How do you think it compares to the NARS version? I love short handled brushes because I can use them without specs, and without scraping the mirror! :)

  2. ahh I cannot wait to get one at IMATS 2012! Have you got comparison to Nars Yachiyo? This one thankfully seems cheaper but I wonder if quality is the same...

  3. I didn't know Hakuhodo made one of those. I just watched a video comparison of the NARS one and a Japonesque version, and it said that the NARS one starts to unravel, but the Japonesque one is discontinued. Nice to know there's another alternative.

  4. Hi ladies! I'm sorry to say that I don't have the NARS to make the comparison. I'll have to have a look some time at a counter so I can at least make the comparison size wise. It might be worth checking is The Non-Blonde has done a direct comparison. I'd be surprised if this one unraveled as it's tightly bonded and appears to have a varnish over the binding.

@dempss01: I giggled at your scraping the mirror comment. The trials of being short-sighted, eh!

@Martita: I'd totally forgotten about IMATS. I will face my annual decision about whether to go so that I can buy Hakuhodo easily :D

@mary: Funnily enough I've just been sent some information about Japonesque brushes and I was going to say that I didn't spot a Yachiyo. It's a shame it's been discontinued.

  6. I really like the look of that, it sounds great. The only thing stopping me ordering is the custom charge as I always seem to get hit for that so have stopped ordering from outside. The brand does seem to be gaining popularity so hopefully a UK site might take it on at some point.
Thanks for the reveiw Jane x

  7. Thank you so much for this post, Jane! I have just been looking at some Hakuhodo brushes. I was thinking of getting this Yachiyo and the 212 blush brush and some eyeshadow brushes. Their selection is just amazing and I like that there is a range of prices as well. As with Replica, the only problem will be the customs charges but I might take a risk for these beauties :)

  8. Hi Jane thanks for the post, gorgeous brush. Am I right in thinking these are available in the US as I'm going in a few weeks? X

  9. @Marina: Thank you for the link. I've seen the video on their website. I love watching it as the way they shift through the hairs so quickly is amazing!

@Replica: I ordered this before the limits changed so it was still within the VAT waiver at that time. I think they're pretty hot on collecting the VAT now and with the PO charge it really bumps up the price. They usually have a stand at IMATS but I guess unless you want to go to look at other items you might just as well pay the customs fees!
@Klara: Are you customs thresholds similar to ours Klara? For some reason I just assumed it was on only us getting the raw deal!

@Claire: Hi Claire. The website I ordered from is based in the States as far as I can tell. I'm not sure that you can buy them in stores though, I have a feeling you have to order online but the shipping within the States is reasonable. Do you have an address you could get things sent to?

  10. Ooooo I love the look of it, I know we should be all about the technique and how it spreads powder but is it bad it makes me think 1940s Shanghai clubs. I adore it!

  11. Yup, the cucstoms threshold for imports to Slovenia is 22€ and that's includng shipping. And then there's also a 5-ish euro fee for the Post, but still I calculated how much I'd pay if I decided to order 3 or 4 brushes and it's not too horrible(of course if I choose the cheaper ones; I always thought Hakuhodo only did the crazy expensive brushes, so it's good to see eye brushes for 10-20 and face brushes for 20-30 dollars). On the other hand I don't want to order them now, with the holidays coming because many packages can get lost during this time. x

  12. This is the best brush for cream blushes. I love the way it applies them so smoothly and softly without harsh edges.

  13. I'm a fan of the shape and the handle size, so this is definitely going on my list of necessities.

  14. @Dawniepants: I love it aesthetically too. It's important to your brushes :D

@Klara: Gosh, that is tight if it includes shipping. I know what you mean about the brush prices too, there are plenty that are very reasonably priced. It sounds sensible to wait until after the holidays to place an order. It would be upsetting if it went astray.

@Marcia: I would never have thought to use it for cream blushers. I will have to give it a go!

@Eden-Avalon: I'm glad you like the look of it, I'm hoping to invest in more of their brushes.

  15. Just a quick heads up for those of you interested in Hakuhodo brushes. I had an email to say the prices are going up in the New Year. Now is the time to get your orders in if you were already thinking about it. I'm all of a dither about what to do myself!
