What do You Reach for When You're in a Rush?

This morning we slept in late and I had very minimal time to put on my make-up. If it was just a school run morning, the slap could have waited until I got home but this was a working day. I invigilate exams and the boys look terrified enough without me sharing my bare face and the evidence of all the late and broken nights. In fact, I ate toast out of my handbag so that I had enough time to put on my face!

Speedy make-up is not the time to start experimenting with new looks so I have a few tried and tested things that I reach for. In my case it's bronzer, MAC Cubic blusher, RBR Solstice Halcyon or Atlas Swallotail, pencil eyeliner, mascara and undereye concealer. I've named Cubic blusher, Solstice Halcyon and Atlas Swallowtail in particular as I really can't mess up with these colours. For most people these are not exciting colours but they just seem to enhance my features and make me look more put together. The neighbours who watched me running whilst stuffing my face with toast would probably disagree with the put together bit!

Where has that magic face-in-a-jar gone to?

I was interested to hear about your trusted items. What do you pick up when you need to apply a face in a couple of minutes? Do you have some well worn, trusted favourites like me?

  1. Mine are benefit bahama mama, mac lippie in patisserie or any of the michael kors for estee lauder lipgloss, ysl false lash mascara, mufe waterproof concealer. I like the sound of handbag toast!

  2. I definitely stick to what I know when I'm in a rush! For me, at the moment, it's usually the Urban Decay Naked palette, Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill mascara, MAC Mighty Aphrodite blush and a slick on lip balm and I'm ready to go!
    xx

  3. Eating toast out of a handbag? Haha, I'm just imaging you have a Mary Poppins bag right now! My 5 minute face would be Collection 2000 Matt + Minerals, Stargazer eyebrow pen, Maybelline falsies mascara and The Balm 'Hot Mama' blush.

  4. LOL at "face-in-a-jar"! Because I wear glasses most days, I don't really use eyeshadow if I'm in a hurry because it just doesn't make enough of a difference. I use some pencil eyeliner (love the Bourjois Smokey Effect because it's very creamy and easy to apply), curl my eyelashes, apply mascara. The foundation I use everyday is Revlon's Colorstay so I don't really have to think about this part, and then I add some blusher/bronzer (LMdB Blonzer, RBR Habanera, Stila cream blushes, Becca Beach Tints, Bourjois chocolate bronzer and the list goes on) and then a neutral lippy like RBR Whim of Mine or Estee Lauder Venetian Rose and I'm done. I swear, it's actually very quick!

  5. Nothing makes me look decent in a hurry! I just want to know one thing - do you keep all your makeup in its boxes? Is it just until it's not knew and 'special' anymore? I take stuff out of its boxes, keep the boxes on the side for a while and then throw them away after an unspecified amount of time when I realise there's no point in keeping them! xx

  6. Trust me, you are not the only one among us who's put your toast in your handbag on the way out.

  7. haha yes, I had to do this this morning, I tend to get up late frequently.

My super fast go to face in a bag is No7 foundation, Collection 2000 concealor, NARs Orgasm blush and Loreal Million Lashes mascara and Im off out the door.

  8. My speedy items are: Lily Lolo foundation, an undereye concealer, NARS Nepal eyeshadow, Becca lipgloss in Amaretto, Nouba Earth Powder 51 as blush/bronzer and whatever mascara I am currently using.

  9. My Bobbi Brown Nude on Nude eye palette gets a lots of attention because it affords me the ultimate easy look.

That plus Mac Instant Chic blusher, any old mascara and a comb dragged through my hair gets me looking vaguely presentable in 5 mins flat.

I think the lesson we've all learned here though is that Handbag Toast is a topic in much need of deeper discussion on this blog.

I look forward to that post :)

  10. I'm always running late and usually end up sacrificing everything else in an attempt to look presentable LOL I don't really have a go to list of products. I will usually just do a quick version of a look I've done recently that I've been happy with so I don't have to "think" about it.

    Great post!

  11. Yep, I stick to what I know:

    - Vincent Longo swiped quickly across my face with a sponge
    - A wash of Laura Mercier eyeshadow in Topaz
    - Clinique Brow Shaper in Shaping Charcoaled
    - Any black mascara
    - Either Laura Mercier Sweet Cherry or Chantetecaille Lip Chic in Dahlia for the lips

If the house were on fire, I'd grab my cats, my Kindle, my brows and my lips. Bare minimum.

  12. Great post idea! I use my tried and tested products every day because I'm perpetually late [and I don't wear much anyway]. I rely on CG Aqua Smoothers tinted moisturizer, Hard Candy Glamouflage, Physician's Formula Powder Palette in Translucent, and whatever lipstick I have on hand. Lipstick is always applied on the way to work!

  13. Great idea and great post!
I sometimes use powder instead of foundatiom over my serum, cream amd sumscreen when in a hurry, especially in hot weather, and line my eyes with a pencil and then smudge with a brush, apply mascara lipstick (lately it is the Guerlain Rouge Automatique) and off I go.

  14. @Sarah: I love MAC Patisserie, I have you to thank for it! I do like a bit of handbag toast. I bet I’m going to get frisked at events from now on, to see if I’m carrying ;)

@Zoe: It sounds like you’ve got it off to an art Zoe. I bet the Naked palette is really handy for speedy eye make up.

@BBH: If only I did have a magic Mary Poppins bag. It would come in rather handy! I like the sound of Hot Mama blush. I was a Hot Mama by the time I got to work, not in the sexy sense though….

@Klara: Yes, I need a specially prepared mask in a jar so that I can just roll it on!! I’m salivating at all of the products you’ve mentioned. Some beautiful choices there.

@SFSC: As I said to you on Twitter, I am a chronic box hoarder. I unboxed loads but just couldn’t bring myself to put them in the recycle bin, so they were flattened and stashed. I’m ashamed of myself!

@Emily: I am extremely pleased to hear I’m not alone with the handbag toast!

@Ms Red: Good to hear it wasn’t just me! Can I ask how you find Million Lashes mascara? Is it worth a look?

@Meeta: The Becca lipgloss in Amaretto sounds lovely. I need to investigate!

@Product Pixie: I think neutrals palettes are definitely the way to go in a rush. I have an old Ruby + Millie on that I loved for emergency face! We definitely do need to explore Handbag Toast in more depth. A tutorial maybe?!

@Perilously Pale: In other circumstances I probably could have gone without food entirely. Unfortunately a growling tummy in a silent exam hall results in glares! I just wish I was quicker at putting makeup on!

@Zuzu’s Petals: Your choices are lovely for a fast face. I can picture that look. I love your final comment, a girl has to have her priorities ;)

@Esther: Really interesting choices Esther, I’ve not heard any mention of Hard Candy in such a long time. I can’t even remember if we still have it in the UK. I planned to put lipstick on, on the way. I had to stick to lip balm though as I discovered that speed walking and trying to apply lipstick is not all that easy!

@Michaela: Oh, that’s a really interesting trick using powder instead of foundation. I bet it still gives a nice finish over the serum and sunscreen.

Thank you for all your comments. This post gave me a good giggle!

  15. It depends mostly on what comes to hand quickly! At the moment probably Diorskin Nude Glow in Rosy Nude. Something from my new Oh So Special Sleek palette, my Sleek Pout Polish in Powder Pink and an Urban Decay 24/7 eye-liner - colour to match shadow used.

  16. I apply 95% of my makeup and skincare in the car. No kidding. It's a habit I am trying to break out.

Murad Emergen-C eye cream and Juice Beauty moisturizer for skincare (thank god for Sephora deluxe samples).

For everyday (aka WORK) makeup, I feel confident as long as I can slap on some Tarte cheekstain, eyeliner of some variety (there are 4 colors in my bag at all times), curl and mascara my lashes.

  17. @too_busy_to_stitch: I want to come over and raid your makeup bag!!

@Ally: I'm all for skincare in the car (unless you're doing while you're driving). I like my bed and appreciate every extra minute I get!
