NARS Mélusine Duo Eyeshadow

The NARS Holiday collection came out at the beginning of the week and I was sent the Mélusine eyeshadow duo to try. I must admit that this really appealed to me when I saw pictures of the collection. It reminded me a bit of my Hourglass duo which I wear a lot.

The dark purple has quite a lot of red to it, unfortunatley I can never quite get my camera to capture these shades. For colour reference though, it is quite similar to MAC Vibrant Grape. The lighter shade is more difficult to describe. It's a silvery grey but has a lilac tone to it, it's very pretty and I think it's rather unique. It has a frost finish wheres the purple is a matte shade.

I was rather concerned when I swatched the purple as it wouldn't go on smoothly. I'm happy to say that it isn't chalky when applied. I used a 217 brush to apply to the crease and I had no problems with the texture. It isn't heavily pigmented though and doesn't apply as dark as you might expect looking at the colour in the pan. I like how these look on the eye though and I think they make a very nice pairing.

I wore these eyeshadows all day and there was a little creasing but considering I went out in the wind and rain, I think the colours lasted very well. It has definitely piqued my interest in the NARS duos eyeshadows. There are some really beautiful pairings. Do you have any favourite NARS eyeshadows?

Disclosure: this item was sent to me without cost for the purposes of review.

  1. I steered clear of this duo because those reddish purples tend to look bruise-y on my fair skin, but it doesn't look that way on you at all! Also loving the silver/lilac. NARS is so good at making dimensional shades, I'm thinking especially of that "green" from the Habanera duo.

  2. That looks really pretty. I still haven't got all I wanted from Nars Fall and now you tempt me with this! I think if I saw it in person I would probably have avoided it because of the matte purple, but I love how you've made it work so it will be going on the Christmas List. The eyeshadow duos are definitely my favourite product from the brand. X

  3. Loving the gleam very much, I think you have a lightness of touch Jane that is enviable, I would have to agree with My Lips But Better above, being fair myself, but your deftness makes me hesitate. Thankyou. Jan x

  4. That looks gorgeous on you! I swatched the blush from the winter collection earlier this week and it barely showed up on my skin - I was amazed! I'll definitely check this duo out tomorrow, the colours look beautiful on.

  5. That purple looks gorgeous!
I am a bit apprehensive about buying NARS shadows because I have heard that they can be a bit chalky, and for the price that they are I really don't want to take that risk.
I hear amazing stuff about the blush though, which is a bit odd as they are both powder products.

  7. I really like the lighter shade, but I'm not sure about the purple one in the pan. It looks lovely on you, but I'm not sure it would go with my skin. xx

  9. @MLBB: I know what you mean about bruise-y. I used to have that problem a lot (back in the 80’s – for shame). Habanera sounds lovely. I’m loving greens at the moment.

@Lipstick Luvvie: Oops, sorry ;). I saw the photos for this collection and fell in love. It appeals to my passion for purples. I have Father Christmas brings you everything you’re after.

@Jan: Thank you, I know what you mean about these shades of purple. They can be a little unfriendly. The texture of the eyeshadow and the 217 brush seemed to prevent me going too heavy with it.

@The Beauty Bite: Hello beautiful lady! I have heard a lot of mixed thoughts on that brusher. It is very light, I am intrigued by it but suspect it wouldn’t show up on me either. I don’t suppose it would work as a highlighter either. I suppose layering with a cream may be a way to make it work? I really like this eyeshadow duo. I might have a go using the silver with some other colours too.

@Kelsey: I agree, their blushers are considered must haves but I know that there is some variation in the textures of the eyeshadows. I was very pleased not to have problems with the purple as I was worried when I swatched it.

@Replica: The trio looks lovely, I haven’t read any reviews though. I think it would really suit you as you do blues very well.

@TheBristolBeautyBlog: It’s a very ‘me’ sort of colour. I love purples but you do have to be careful with the bruise-y effect. I love the lighter colour, I’m going to try it with some other colours too.

Thanks for all of your comments. I hope the swatches were useful,

  13. Hope you don't mind me asking, but how do you get samples sent to you? Do you contact PR agencies or do they approach you? While I definitely don't blog to receive samples, I wouldn't say no to them, especially considering how much free advertising I do for all my fave brands and how much money I've spent on their products. ;) Thx. xxx

  14. @Dutchess Roz: I’ll have to have a look, I think Jest is much more of a peach tone though. The lighter shade is silvery with a hint of lilac. I’m not sure I’ve seen anything similar. I’ll have to have a look at Hula Hula!

@Blushingloves: Thank lovely, I love purple too.

@honody3: Thank you for your comment :)

@Ali: Why thank you, I’m very pleased with it. I do rather like a little bit of purple action ;-)

@Nina: I think the light shade is definitely unique. I want to try it with a green as well. Although I am a purple fiend I think it’s the lighter colour that I’m most pleased with.

@Anitacska: I don’t mind at all. The PR company emailed me. I have contacted PRs before to ask for press releases but not for samples. My advice would be to get in touch with your favourite companies and see if they have a mailing list you could join.

@Ms. Wedgie: I really want to try more NARS. I don't have much, every time I try and narrow it down though I find more things I want to try! I'm very pleased with this and would like to try more of the eyeshadows now.

  19. Always glad to be of service Michelle ;). I have worn the lighter colours a few times now on it's own as well. I really like.

Hi Tina, start dropping hints immediately! Always best to plant the seeds early. It's a nice duo and I'm pleased to have had the opportunity to dry the NARS eyeshadows. I'm quite taken.
