NARS Douceur: Swatches and Comparison

I finally caved and bought NARS Douceur recently. NARS Douceur is a very 'me' sort of blusher, it's a pinky brown shade that adds a little colour and acts to sculpt the cheeks. I had hesitate over buying this colour before as it's quite similar to several blushers that I already own. I have included a comparison below to show you exactly what I mean about the similarity.

Douceur is a neutral pinky brown and has a satin finish, if it catches the light in just the right way you will see tiny flecks of microshimmer (you can see this if you enlarge the pictures above). The microshimmer isn't visible on the cheeks but the tiny amount of shimmer stops it looking completely flat. It's not as densely pigmented as my other NARS blushers, as I discovered when swatching, but I can't say I had any issues with the colour when applying. The effect with this sort of blusher is subtle and acts a bit like contouring. I often favour these sorts of colours as they pair well with practically any eye look or lipstick shade.

When I compared Douceur to my other similar blushers I was happy to see none are exact dupes. However, I wouldn't say you need all of these colours unless you are a bit pinky-brown obsessed like me! The swatches shown are heavy application, with three or four passes of the pan to build up the colour. MAC Prim & Proper was a limited edition colour from the Give Me Liberty of London collection, this shade is the warmest and most tan colour of the bunch. Douceur appears to pull more brown than MAC Cubic, which I think looks like a dusty pink in comparison. RBR Delicata is the lightest of the four and is probably more beige-pink when compared to the others.

I enjoy wearing all of these blushers but find Prim & Proper is probably the most neglected. If you're nervous of blusher or you're looking for something to give a subtle colour to the cheeks, I would happily recommend Douceur, Cubic or Delicata. All three are easy to wear in terms of both colour and finish.

  2. Useful comparison, I have Douceur and it is one of those shades that I don't need to think about and can pair with a lot of looks so I think it's a nice one to have. I don't have any of the other ones, but from your swatches Cubic looks nice also.

  3. Nice going Jane, thanks a lot! Now I'm adding both Cubic AND Douceur on my list...I just love these shades, although I can't always carry them off.
    My poor bank account, honest.

  5. That looks gorgeous! I think the Douceur is about to become a "need" for me. Love the cat paw, lol. I have Cubic, and that is an excellent representation of it above. It's a lot like MAC Tenderling, only satiny, and both are dirty pinks. Nice!

  6. Oh wow, I had no idea Douceur was so similar to Prim & Proper! I got P&P from a CCO a few months ago and it's been my go-to neutral blush that gives me a gorgeous peaches-and-cream complexion. Douceur has been on my "buy next time I spot a beauty.com coupon" list for ages. Do you think the shimmer in Douceur is enough to keep it from being to close a dupe to P&P? Thx!!

  7. @Ms Red: Ah, are these shades that you find you don’t get on with? These are my ‘safe’ colours.

@Meeta: I love these sorts of colours for everyday. Cubic is lovely and was really *the* tipping point for me in wearing blushers.

@Nina: Ooops, sorry ;). Cubic was a really early blusher purchase for me and one I still wear regularly. I love these kinds of colours. You’ll have to give my name to your Bank manager!

@Skin Scrubs: Ha ha! That’s Harry and I thought it was unfair that he never gets a look in!

@Zuzu’s Petals: Douceur is another nice everyday colour, I think if you like Cubic you’ll like this. I shall have to have a look at Tenderling. It sounds like another that I would like.

@Rachel: I would call Douceur a satin finish and I would say the finish is very similar to P&P. P&P is definitely darker than Douceur, it’s a little warmer and less neutral I would say. They’re definitely not exact dupes but they are similar I would say. I can try and take some pictures on the face to compare if it would help?

    Thanks for your comments,

  8. I have Douceur and Delicata but not the other two...now I think I need them. haha. I love Douceur -- always feel sophisticated when I have it on. It's been one of my go-to blushes lately!

    Happy Easter as well Jane!

  10. Thanks for this post. I am needing to buy a blush similar to the shades here. I am sick of buying corals!

  11. I need to look in to pinky-brown blushes and see if they work for me. I find that I need colour on my face (never been a gal who can get away with 'bronzer as blush') so I guess it depends on how much pink and how much brown are in them! :)

  12. So pretty, and very helpful comparisons. I have Douceur and now I think I may need Cubic too :)

  13. @Michelle: Douceur is lovely, I’ve picked that out again today. I’m a big fan of Cubic too.

@Jadegrrrl: I really like these for accentuating the cheeks, I’m pleased it’s a helpful comparison. I should have included Strada too thinking about it.

@Tara: I’m scared of corals but love how they look on others, these are my ‘safe’ colours. I was really late to wearing blusher at all so I’m still learning what colours I can wear.

@dempss: I really wish you were not the other side of the world so that I could show you in person! I find it’s true that it’s got to be just the right balance of colour. Prim & Proper is straying into more Bronzer territory which I suspect is why it gets the least attention. Cubic might be a good one for you to try as I’d say that’s the least brown. But both Douceur and Delicata seem to act with the natural skin colour to just create a colour which sculpts in cheeks bones naturally. I know that Delicata definitely works on darker skin tones too as I did a little research (read, I attacked Mr. MB’s arm ;) ).

@Makeup Magpie: Cubic has been a favourite for some time now. It was one of my first blushers and I still reach for it regularly.

  15. Beautiful neutral blushes - one of the most neglected category in my opinion!!!
Douceur looks lovely, but as I own Delicata among a couple of other neutral blushes, I don't feel the urge to purchase, it's definitely one to keep in mind though - good neutral blushes are hard to come by!!!
