I Heart Cosmetics in the Friday Confessional

Today it's the turn of the gorgeous Sarah from I Heart Cosmetics. I have met Sarah and can't possibly believe she has anything shady in her beauty past. Lets find out what secrets she's been hiding....

Confession is good for the soul, go ahead and unburden yourself! I promise I won’t judge.

•    From the age of 11 to 14 I bleached my hair with Sun-In spray on bleach. In fact I was so sneaky that I don’t think my own mother even realised that wasn’t my natural hair colour! I would buy a spray every month and do a little bit every time I dried my hair. What a little terror! Obviously I thought I looked like Britney meets Barbie...in reality my hair was a shade of yellow only previously seen on flipping Goldilocks. Sun In’s marketing is very sneaky, with words like ‘Sun’ and ‘Lemon Fresh’ it almost sounds like a lovely natural product. No wonder I was confused when my hair was frazzled to a crisp.

•    Prior to blogging I had realised that having my eyebrows shaped was a good idea. What I apparently hadn’t realised was that getting them waxed into a ridiculous thin line like this was very very wrong. I have realised the error of my ways and now get them threaded in Selfridges, shame it took 3 years to work that one out!

•    I absolutely detested my hair when I dyed it dark. It took three months and many people telling me it look a million miles better for me to start to believe them. I like that my hair is thicker and much more healthy and shiny now. I still secretly prefer blond hair though.

•    The very first time I got my legs waxed was at a little salon near the office. I popped there on my lunchbreak and tootled back shortly after, I was impressed with the lack of pain and felt rather smug about my smooth silky thighs. That is until I was sat at lunch and someone helpfully pointed out that not only was one of the paper napkins stuck to my thigh but that I had walked through the restaurant at work with it trailing from my leg. Cringe. I’ll stick with shaving thanks.

There, don’t you feel better now? Erm........perhaps ‘better’ isn’t the word.

Aunty Brown has a few more questions though; it’s true that I’m the nosy type.

When was the last time you visited the hairdresser?

I’m a good girl now with two lovely hairdressers so every 6-7 weeks at Toni and Guy in Covent Garden. Before that I would happily let my hair go 6 months or so without a trim and I coloured it (badly) at home.

You have a choice: bad hair or bad nails?

Bad nails, you can stick some falsies over the top but bad hair can be seen by everyone. I don’t think a weave would suit me! That being said I am a bit precious about my nails, and am always using nail strengtheners or trying new salon products to make them stronger. I think I will stick with bad nails over hair but would want a big pair of gloves to hide them!

What is the oldest item of make up in your collection?

I am very good at throwing things away like mascara and lip-gloss but I would have to say the oldest thing is a Mac holiday eyeshadow palette from the 2007 collection, which at three years old I now realise is pretty rank! I don’t know whether that means I should purchase the shadows individually or, since I haven’t even hit pan on one colour in three years, means that I should just throw it away?!

Which trend still makes you cringe?

I was a willing participant in the dark lip liner light lipstick phase. I put all blame on Ricki Lake being put on at an after-school timeslot; I was a young and impressionable teenager!

I may also have had the most hideous bobbed haircut with fringe in the entire world. No wonder my loathing of hairdressers lasted so many years!

---------------------------------------------

Ha ha ha!! It seems like a few of us were tempted by the promises of Sun-In. Thank you Sarah for sharing. You might not feel better but I certainly do! I am very impressed at you being so diligent at throwing products away. The palette will be fine, the rule is, if it hasn't changed colour or texture and doesn't smell it's fair game!

If you would like to take a turn and unburden yourself in the Friday Confessional you can email me at modestybrown@googlemail.com. It's open to everyone: if you have something to confess, I'm happy to hear it!

  2. Haha.. Great post, I can't believe what you did with the sun in, that made me smile. I was the same with my eyebrows, one day I was like "I need to do something" and since then, I've done something! xx

  3. We've all fallen for Sun-In as impressionale 14 year olds! My hair wents seriously ginger! I've also ruined my eyebrows from overplucking! if only we could turn back the clocks!

  4. @Grace: True fact. I've been there with the frazzled hair. There was nothing in the least bit sun-kissed about my fried orange hair.

@Sophie: It was a great post. I love receiving these confessions and getting the first peek!

@Nic: Maybe we should start a leaflet drop at High Schools. Step away from the Sun In and tweezers!

  5. seems like we've all gone through an excessive plucking/eaxing stage. Isnt it odd how much difference a decent set of eyebrows can make!?

I reckon that 3 year old palette is just an ickle baby - I have some seriously old makeup in my collection and can't bring myself to chuck it! :)

  6. Ah so 3 years not too bad? My mum winds hands down. She has a nailvarnish from before I was born...and I am 25!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. No, 3 years is nothing. I depotted a palette a while ago that I received as a Christmas present when I was about 15. So, it's almost *cough cough* 20 years old *cough*. For shame!

  9. Thank you so much Fee, I'm glad you enjoy them. I can only take minimal credit though!

Hi All Made Up! I never had an over-plucking phase. My sister did on the other hand and it served as great deterrent! I am guilty of hording though and can't bring myself to part with some things. I think 3 years is very good myself.

  10. Hi Ms. Wedgie, I crossed comments with you there I think. Sun In is evil. They need to add some cigarette style warnings one the side.

WARNING: This may turn your hair orange and the combination of bleach and lemon is not sexy. Not sexy at ALL!

  11. i'm exactly the opposite! i'm always a bad hair over bad nails person...but my hair is curly and i can disguise the nasty ombre colour my hair has turned into with some clever pins and twists. bad nails or chipped nails is like walking around with loo roll stuck to your heels! i just could NEVER do it! that and when i get my hair done i get a base colour, full highlights, colour in between the foils and then a final glossing colour on top when the highlights are done. so i can't AFFORD to get it done as often as i want but the end results are so bloody gorgeous it's worth waiting 6 months! haha!

i loved the interview! i never did sun in...i always read about it in the babysitter's club books but my mum would've SLAUGHTERED me if she caught me..and she knew everything. or so i thought at the time.

  13. @dailypolish: Gosh, that sounds a really involved process for you hair colouring visits. How long does it take? I admire you for being so good with your nails. Mine need some deep TLC! Glad you enjoyed Sarah’s confessions. It sounds like you had a lucky escape from the Sun-In!

@Tina: I’m so pleased you enjoyed it. There’s definitely some more elderly items in my collection too ;)
