Vaguely in Vogue in the Friday Confessional

This week sees the turn of the hilarious Ms. Wedgie from Vaguely in Vogue. When Wedgie asked if she could take a turn in the hot seat I knew it was going to be a goodie. I don't know how I've held on to this for several weeks. I predict a lot of Hail Mary Quants this week...

Confession is good for the soul, go ahead and unburden yourself! I promise I won’t judge.

* I used to pick away at my split ends like it was going out of fashion.  I took great pleasure in finding massive great big splits and then pulling them apart so that they split all the way up the shaft of the hair!

* When I've got a snaggley bit of cuticle I sometimes (only sometimes) use my kitchen or work scissors to hack of the offending bit of skin.  This involves scrapping the scissors across the nail until it comes off!  I've even been known to use a kitchen knife to do this as well. I am now trying to be a 'better person' and try to keep a mini nail set on my person at all times.

*  I never ever EVER used to wash my make up brushes.  I had brushes that must have been used over and over again for years without seeing a drop of water or soap.  They were covered in layers and layers of multi-coloured powder and filth and they(unsurprisingly) smell a little bit musty.  I wish it to be noted for the record that I do wash them!

*  I once had a Bettie Page style fringe even though I was told repeatedly by the hairdresser that it wouldn't suit me.  I don't think I need to take this one much further than that really. It was utterly ridiculous and there are NO pictures in existence of me with this hairstyle.

* Like many others I rocked the dark liner and nude lipstick look that prevailed throughout the 90's.  Why did we all think that this looked good?  It sooooooooooooooooo didn't.  I would even wear red lip liner with nude lipstick...all piled on top of a load of concealer! ICK!!!

* I used to use COPIOUS amounts of 'Sun In' hair lightener when I was younger.  I don't know if they even still sell the stuff anymore...maybe it's been outlawed.  Now...bearing in mind my natural hair colour is dark brown...look at this picture of me when I was 17.  Check out the weird coloured hair.  It always remained brown at the roots and the ends were just a bizarre un-natural orangey yellow colour.  Thankfully I quickly grew out of this faze.

* I was a teeny tiny bit obsessed with Bjork when I was younger.  You know how she used to have slightly crazy make up and loads of little jewels stuck all over her face.  Well that was an everyday daytime look for me when I was 18...along with all the hair twists which used to take me forever to put in.  I would quite literally spend hours getting ready to go to Uni.

There, don’ t you feel better now?
I feel cleansed of my former sins now Mrs. ModestyBrown! :)

Aunty Brown has a few more questions though; it’ s true that I’ m the nosy type.

When was the last time you visited the hairdresser?
I was good girl and went about three weeks ago! I feel smug now because I've done something correctly...although before that it had been about 7 months before I had it cut! *hangs head in shame*  The longest time between haircuts I've ever had was 9 months!!!  I looked like a complete and utter tramp.

You have a choice: bad hair or bad nails?
Definitely bad nails!  It's only been since about May this year that I've actually started taking an interest in my nails (see the before and after here) so it would be much easier to go back over to the 'darkside' of having munched nails.  If I had bad hair I'd never leave the house

What is the oldest item of make up in your collection?
That's an easy one ...an Avon Spectrum Eyeshadow which is circa 1985!!  Have a look at this post if you don't believe me! :)  Even after admitting to owning such a 'blast from the past' I still haven't thrown it away!!  I think I must have some kind of deep rooted emotional attachment to the lil ole thing.  Either that or I'm ever so slightly mental...I'll let the mighty Mrs ModestyBrown be the judge of that!

Which trend still makes you cringe?
Oh god...it was a 90's hairstyle that was known at my school as 'the Berlin wall'.  It basically involved having a centre parting and applying several cans of hairspray to get the front sections of your hair to go high as humanly possibly. I can't find any pictures of me with this hair (they were probably burnt for the greater good of mankind) but if you imagine Cameron Diaz in 'Something About Mary' only with two lots of hair sticking up.  It was truly tragic.

If it wasn't for my Mother being a 1000 times more sensible then me, I would of had a spiral perm as well!!! Eeeeeeeek!!!  She obviously foresaw that this would be a huge styling mistake and refused to allow me to have it done!  I continue to thank my mom daily for this! :)

Oh Ms Wedgie, I don't know whether to laugh or cry, I love the 'Berlin Wall'! I remember having a  Sun In phase myself. That stuff was evil! I'm afraid Aunty Brown is laughing too hard to meeter out any penance. Looks like you're off the hook!

If you would like to take a turn and unburden yourself in the Beauty Confessional you can email me at modestybrown@googlemail.com. It's open to everyone: if you have something to confess, I'm happy to hear it!

  3. Nooooo...I'd forgotten what I'd written! Can I now say that you've made up every word and that it's all lies? LOL I'd love to know if anyone else called that hairstyle 'the Berlin wall' or whether it's just a 'Wolverhampton' thing! :)

@Eyelining: There must be something about your school days. I remember exactly the same look (blue eyeliner, sprayed fringe etc) only for me it was in the 80’s. The post sports changing room was always awash with hairspray fumes!
