Friday Confessional: The Series!

If you're a regular reader, you already know I love a bit of Friday fun. This Friday is very special as it heralds the start of my new feature. I am inviting guest posters to come and take a turn in my Friday Confessional.

This week it's the turn of the lovely Welsh Beauty Blog. WBB, as I like to call her, is a fellow Mummy and make up enthusiast with a great sense of humour. I'm grateful to her for being brave enough to be first in to the Beauty Confessional. I hope you enjoy reading her confessions as much as I did!

Confession is good for the soul, go ahead and unburden yourself! I promise I won’t judge..

•   From the ages of about 15-17 I shaved my eyebrows. Yes, you read it right... SHAVED. Totally shaved them off so they had to be drawn back on (in black eyeliner to match my jet black goth hair, natch) I am still to this day, mortified by this period in my life. I came to my senses and ditched the bic and within about six months of growing out, I managed to cultivate a fairly normal, albeit sparse pair of brows. They’re still thin and sparse to this day.

•   After leaving the goth phase behind, I developed a penchant for sunbeds. Sunbeds AND tan accelerator lotions. I know, I know *hangs head in shame*

•   Since marriage and the arrival of a small child, I’m a bit slack on the ol’ hair removal front. I’ve been known to skip hair removal of my legs and *ahem* bikini line until I resemble a yeti. Okay, maybe not that bad but when time is of the essence something's got to give! Good job I mostly wear trousers!

•   I have a terrible habit of spot-picking. I just can’t help it. Spots, blackheads, milia - if they’re on my face and they shouldn’t be - you can guarantee I’ll prod, poke, squeeze and even stab at it until it’s either gone or I’m red and often bleeding and can do no more!

•   I once called in sick with a 'tummy bug' because I'd had my hair done at a new salon on the Saturday and they had totally messed it up. They were meant to strip the black dye out of my hair and get it back as near to my natural blonde as possible. I ended up ginger, to cut a long story short. I was so embarrassed I couldn't face seeing everyone in work so I faked illness and headed back to the salon on the Monday to sort it out

There, don’t you feel better now?

(Not really, mortified doesn't even cover it!)

Aunty Brown has a few more questions though; it’s true that I’m the nosy type.

When was the last time you visited the hairdresser?
About 4 weeks before I gave birth to my son, so about 15 months ago! They gave me the worst haircut I've ever had and I've been scared off salons ever since. I was heavily pregnant and had gained 4st - my face was round and puffy so what did they do? Cropped my (naturally curly) hair into a super short asymmetric bob and shaved the back of my hair. I looked beastly! It was a high end salon too, so I'm afraid to try anywhere else and instead have been chopping at my split ends and fringe myself. I'd welcome any recommendations for any attentive hair stylists in the South Wales area who can actually listen to what a client wants!

You have a choice: bad hair or bad nails?
Oh no! I hate these types of questions, as I'm really quite vain! I suppose either can be covered up with a wig and gel nails. I'm going to say hair - my hair is pretty bad at the moment anyway - it's in terrible condition and thinning. I'm quite a catch.

I used to be a nail biter and I couldn’t go back to having bad nails again, I enjoy painting my nails now and I think a nice pair of hands with tidy, manicured nails is really important.

What is the oldest item of make up in your collection?
I've got a couple of Lancome Juicy Tubes that I bought when they first launched or a Chanel 'Brilliance Lumiere' sunkissed fluid that was limited edition what seems like a lifetime ago -the latter has turned and now has a really nasty smell but I can't bear to throw it away.
Both the Brilliance Lumiere and the Juicy Tubes are practically full and mostly unused.
*goes off to do some googling*
Okay, so it turns out Lancome Juicy Tubes launched in 2000 and the Brilliance Lumiere was LE in the 2004 collection - so they are 10 and 6 years old respectively!

Which trend still makes you cringe?

My drawn on eyebrows rank pretty highly. That and scrunchies *shudder* I must have owned every colour of the rainbow - but I was young and naive. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

  1. Hahaha thank you Welsh Beauty Blog for a fantastic start to my Friday! I think we can all relate to your confessional. I have to admit to a tomboy phase where I somehow managed to convince my mum to chop my thick, wavy hair into a short boyish crop. Then proceeded to look like I had a lampshade on my head while growing it out. You'd think it'd stop there, right? Nooo... Then came the scrunchies and wide, plastic hair bands and frizzy hair. I don't know whether to laugh or cry really!

Cheers Aunty Brown for the guest confessionals! :)

  2. Yay this is brill! What a good idea! Oh I think we all wore terrible hair scrunchies in our youth! I too, was terrified of hairdressers - I found a good one recently though and was sooo relieved! See here (http://nicsnotebook.com/2010/10/12/new-hair-new-me/) Can't wait for the next confessional lol...:)

  5. What a fantastic feature!
Thanks to both of you Welsh Beauty Blog and Aunty Brown (lol). I admit that the "yeti" description rang more than a few bells for me (the shame!). As for old items, I own specimens going back to the very early eighties (emptied out or sanitised and unusable of course) and even one of the very first stick blush/illuminators by Estee Lauder which I purchased in Greece in 1978! I just love looking at them as a sort of diary of my life in cosmetics lol...

  7. This is a really fun idea! Reading about other people's experiences in the name of beauty is hilarious and makes me feel so much better (RE: sick day off work for hair cut).

Can't wait for the next installment.

Also, realise you're from Oxford! So glad I found a blogger from the area, since you can update with news about shops in the area rather than only London. Yay.

  9. @Georgina: I can relate to the boyish crop. In fact, I did that a few times. There’s even an old school photo of me where I seem to be sporting a flat top. I blame my Mother for that one! Glad you enjoyed WBB’s confessions. They certainly gave me a giggle!

@Nic’s Notebook: I’m glad you enjoyed in Nic. I’ll have to have a look at your hairdresser post, thanks for the link.

@Debbie: I don’t know how I resisted posting this till today! I loved reading WBB’s confessions too. I’m so pleased it helped you start the day!

@Charlie: I know what you mean, I’m guilty of a few of these too. I shall be sending you an email to arrange your turn behind the musty curtains ;)

@Nina: I’m so pleased you enjoyed the post! Your collections sounds amazing, I would think it’s actually interesting to keep certain things to chart how the fashions have changed in make up and it’s packaging. I need to email you, I promise I haven’t forgotten it’s just been a bit of an odd week. I shall be probing the biochemist tonight!

@Sam: I’m so pleased you like the feature. You’re right, we’ve all got a few secrets to share, I’m sure! I hope you’ve had a productive day.

@Lily Blue: I really enjoyed reading WBB’s answers too. Very amusing!

@Cassie: I’ve already got some of the ones that will be coming over the next few weeks. There’s definitely more fun reading on the way! Although I’m your area I admit that I either shop online or go to London. Very naughty, I really ought to do some local research!

@WelshBeautyBlog: Thank you so much again for being the first one in my confessional. I really loved reading your confessions, as I say, I had to stop myself from posting it early!

Thanks for all of your comments, I hope you’re having a lovely Friday.

  10. Brilliant post! Loved the confessional. There's definitely few there that I'm guilty of...shall we say I'm currently sporting the 'Yeti' look!

I always wanted to sport the Goth look, but my Mum would never let me (I think I was about 12 at the time, and she put her foot down). She hit the roof when I dyed my hair black. Luckily, I grew out of that phase before I was allowed to wear whatever I wanted, so I missed out on the 'joys' of having shaved eyebrows!

Thanks MB and WBB - this definitely made me smile! xx
